By Jonathan Sutton

Hello, my name is Jonathan Sutton and I am the recently elected Conservative Future Representative for Hathern and Dishley (which is one of the wards in the Loughborough Constituency). I personally got involved with Loughborough Conservatives about 12 months ago and have since become an integral part of Nicky Morgan’s campaign to become the next MP for Loughborough.

Nicky stood in this constituency the last time around and managed to reduced Andy Reed’s majority from 6, 378 to 1996 and with several boundary changes this majority has been reduced further. The Loughborough Conservative Team understands that we must all take David Cameron’s message of change out to the every single person in the constituency; we want to make a difference and we want to be part of the change that we believe only the Conservatives can deliver. One way in which the Loughborough Conservatives have been able to do this is to show that, in the words of David Cameron, ‘everyone is invited’ to join and get involved with the Conservatives of today, has been through us; the ever growing team of young activists in Loughborough.

It was, in part, through the hard work of the Loughborough Conservative Future team, that the difficulties faced by the unemployed were highlighted. I myself have been looking for a job since finishing college in June and have had no success to date in my job search and so I was able to add my own experiences to the mass of information that we gathered from unemployed people on this topic. The level of unemployment in Loughborough has risen an incredible 99% in Loughborough since September 2008 and so this is clearly a big problem in this constituency and the Job Centre is so badly organised, in my opinion, and so poorly managed that people like me who desperately want to find a job are just not given the help we need to help find work. We obviously have a huge university in our town which provides employers with an unlimited supply of well educated students looking for work and so for people like me who don’t even have any work experience, the job market seems to be completely out-of-bounds. It was from knocking on doors and engaging with young voters that our team was able to personify this problem.

On Saturday Nicky Morgan organised a successful Careers Workshop which was entirely free and was open to everybody and people of all ages and backgrounds turned up. Nicky used the information that we had gathered to help format the Workshop, taking care to address every area highlighted. It boasted speakers such as; Anna Soubry, PPC for Broxtowe who, as a Criminal Lawyer and former TV Journalist was able to provide guests with a great insight into confidence boosting techniques; a Life Coach who was conducted an interactive and informative session that challenged the beliefs we hold about ourselves and encouraged us to find the confidence to overcome any doubts that we may have in ourselves, a Careers Advisor who has helped hundreds of people to get back to work and was able to provide us with some outstanding advice on building CVs and covering letters; a Senior HR Advisor, from whom we gained some great advice on going to interviews and a UK Fashion Advisor for Green House, a Danish based fashion company, who was able to give us some great hints and tips on what to wear for interviews.

So on Saturday, instead of searching job sites and wondering what more I can do to secure a job, I did something useful. The event ran from 9.00am-1.00pm and after that I went home feeling rejuvenated and much more confident in my own ability to find something than I have done for a long time; and I applied for jobs, putting in to place the guidance that I was given. I now have an interview this week, the first interview since I started to apply June; it just goes to show that by opening your mouth and getting involved in politics your voice can easily be heard. I can’t tell you how happy I am, thanks Nicky!

Welcome to the tenth edition of Conservative Future news in Yorkshire and Humber

Yorkshire & Humber CF Overview
by Regional Chairman Philip Smith

Over the past month CF branches across the Region have been doing what they all do best; campaigning hard for our parliamentary candidates and providing plenty of social opportunities for new members. With strong support from Area Chairmen, branches have delivered thousands of leaflets and knocked on plenty of doors in Sheffield, Barnsley, Selby, York, Hull, Huddersfield and Leeds.

The new CF branch we have at York St John, headed by Carl Walters, works with York Central and Harrogate and Knaresborough constituencies. If you can support Carl with building up this branch please drop him a message through the facebook group located at http://www.facebook.com/home.php?ref=home#/group.php?gid=66415837283

I will be away from 25th November – 3rd December representing Yorkshire CF in Berlin at the IYDU Conference followed by a few days break in London. Please contact Graduate Officer, Chris Wales, at chris.wales@yorkshirecf.com who will be stepping in for me during this period.

Joe Frake (joe.frake@yorkshirecf.com) and Felix Bungay (felix.bungay@yorkshirecf.com) will be representing CF at Yorkshire Conference on Saturday. I hope every member that is attending has a great time.

Next month there are plenty of Christmas Parties taking place across the Region. Check out the events section to find out what’s happening and where. For opportunities in Yorkshire drop me an email at chairman@yorkshirecf.com.

Area Chairman News

Andrew Barrett for East Riding of Yorkshire and North East Linconshire

This month in East Yorkshire we’re working harder than ever. Thousands of leaflets have gone out on the streets. Hull CF had a large campaign day in Brigg & Goole. The event was well attended and enjoyed by all. We’re not just a campaigning bunch either, Hull CF had a large curry night at the end of November as we feel socials are a vital part of our group. We plan to continue hard right through December ensuring that our target seats get the much needed attention as we run up to Christmas. You can email Andrew at andrew.barrett@yorkshirecf.com

Chris Southeran for North Yorkshire

In North Yorkshire, our attention has turned towards preparations for the general election. As we enter the final month of 2009, this will undoubtedly become increasingly important. We continue to campaign as much as possible for Julian Sturdy in York Outer and Nigel Adams in Selby. I write this fresh from a great days’ work, leafleting with Nigel in Tadcaster. My thanks to the CF team that made the day a great success!

However, we are conscious of other areas in North Yorkshire that will need CF assistance in the run up to next Spring – particularly Andrew Jones campaign in Harrogate and Knaresborough. This again will provide an important CF link to the 2010 campaign strategies that will, I am sure, be particularly intensive. Contact Chris at chris.southeran@yorkshirecf.com

Dan Paterson for West Yorkshire

West Yorkshire C.F. has been campaigning over the past month with Leeds CF campaigning in Leeds North East, Elmet & Rothwell and Pudsey. Getting large numbers out to help in these constituencies is helping with the leaflet deliveries and the hospitality shown by the PPCs has been fantastic. We are increasing membership all the time and with Anthony Bracewell heading an upcoming branch in Wakefield we are able to give assistance to more candidates in more parts of West Yorkshire than ever before.

Whilst campaigning has been steadily ongoing and we continue to make significant inroads in this respect, we are also aware that our members need to let heir hair down. For this reason we have put together a Christmas Party for Friday 4th December at the Smokestack bar in Leeds. Details are available in the events section of this news update. If you live in West Yorkshire and want to get involved in helping David Cameron get to Downing Street, there truly has never been a better time, contact me at dan.paterson@yorkshirecf.com

James Gould for South Yorkshire

October saw CF in South Yorkshire spring back to life after the summer break. September saw record recruitment figures in South Yorkshire and so in October we capitalised on this with both busy campaigning and social schedules. The highlight of this schedule was undoubtedly the brilliant William Hague dinner hosted by Wentworth Conservative Association. The evening was a wonderful event and we were thrilled to welcome so many of our friends, not just from across Yorkshire, but also Birmingham University CF to Sheffield. Finally thank you to Brian Taylor and Wentworth Association for the generous discount they gave to CF members at the meal. You can contact James at james.gould@yorkshirecf.com
