Why does everyone seem to think it's an American tradition? It is based on a Celtic festival and was celebrated long before it became so commercialized. The Church moved All Saint's Day to try to cover it it and convert it into a Christian festival, as it did with many secular traditions, but somehow it moved from being on the same day and managed to slip through the net. It's about so much more than getting sweets.

It is the Pagan New Year - Samhain... where the veil between our world and the shadow world is the thinnest, and spirits may cross into our realm. So Pagans believe :o) the pumpkins are supposed to ward off evil sprirts...and yes, Christianity hijacked it just like Christmas!
