About A Fraction of the Whole by Steve Toltz

'The fact is, the whole of Australia despises my father more than any other man, just as they adore my uncle more than any other man. I might as well set the story straight about both of them.'

Heroes or criminals?
Crackpots of visionaries?
Relatives or enemies?

It's a simple family story...

From the New South Wales bush to bohemian Paris, from sports fields to strip clubs, from the jungles of Thailand to a leaky boat in the Pacific, A Fraction of the Whole follows the Deans on their freewheeling, scathingly funny and finally deepy moving quest to leave their mark on the world.

Feminism "Negotiating with memories isn't easy: how to choose between those panting to be told, those still ripening, those already shriveling, and those destined to be mangled by language and come out pulverized?"

Maria Mannix Laughed my tits off all the way through and wet myself more than once. Fucking amazing how someone can be so consistently funny in such an original way for a whole 720 pages - this guy is a genius

Chris Reagan

Chris Reagan Just finished the book tonight and I enjoyed the hell out of it. Far and away the most enjoyable read I've had in the last few years. I read it during my lunch breaks for the last month or so and it lived mostly on the passenger seat of my car. There were more than a few angry motorists in Ann Arbor honking at me becau...se I couldn't help but pick it up to read just a few paragraphs and proceeded to get distracted.

Nathaniel

Nathaniel This novel is one of my favorites of all time. I loved it from start to finish. It's a mixture of the zany intellectual play of Tom Robbins, the characters that start to feel like old friends that John Irving writes, the propulsive insanity of Hunter Thompson, and the epic storyline reminiscent of Shantaram by Gregory ...David Roberts. I absolutely could not put it down and will visit it again and again.

Alok Pisharody lame idea: the blurb of the book should be called "a fraction of the fraction of the whole."
