Helen Zille For a democracy to work, power must be held to account. For this reason, the institutions of state, (such as the courts and the public broadcaster) must be genuinely independent from the ruling party. They must protect the public interest, not the party’s interests. This is where the notion of the separation of powers comes from. The “separation of powers” is the cornerstone of accountable democracy.

Helen Zille The DA is proposing legislation to outlaw any officials from awarding government contracts to private companies in which they have interests. Public servants must not be able to do business with the state. We are going to launch a national campaign demanding financial disclosure forms for all elected representatives and officials. I intend writing to all DA members urging them to action on this.

Helen Zille I will visit the Esselen Park community in Kempton Park tomorrow morning, where I will be engaging with residents, listening to their grievances and visiting their homes.

Helen Zille The DA congratulates Mr. Justice Sandile Ngcobo on his appointment as Chief Justice. His appointment brings with it the sacred responsibility of upholding South Africa’s laws and safeguarding our Constitution. It is no exaggeration to say that the future of South Africa’s democracy depends on how he, and his fellow judges discharge the responsibility with which they have been vested.

Helen Zille I am meeting President Zuma and the Minister of Police in Pretoria today, to discuss the crime epidemic and urge immediate action after the latest revelations of police mismanagement.

Helen Zille We must become a society where racism is accurately defined and universally condemned, where people are judged by their character, capacity and qualities; and where political parties are judged by their policies. We must become a society in which race is no longer the issue. The issues must become the issue.

Helen Zille I am in Kwa-Zulu Natal today and will address supporters at the site of Nelson Mandela’s capture, a land mark in the struggle against apartheid. I will be joined by community leaders, Dr Frank Mdlalose, the first premier of KZN, Rita Easton, anti-apartheid activist a former Black Sash member and Kanagie Pillay, a former Chatsworth Woman of the Year.
