A New Global Order?
St Paul’s Cathedral
27th October 2009, 6.30 – 8pm

The financial crisis has affected people all over the world, including the most vulnerable. The sums of money spent rescuing the economy have dwarfed those given in international aid and needed to realise the Millennium Development Goals for poverty... reduction. What does this mean for good global governance, and do we need a radical, collective change of mind and heart in order for the world to be governed for the good? Is there a role for spiritual leadership? And in this new financial world, is poverty more or less likely to be made history?

Panel:
Douglas Alexander MP, Secretary of State for International Development
Elizabeth Koepping, Lecturer, World Christianity, University of Edinburgh
Salil Shetty, Director of the Millenium Development Campaign

Chair: Richard Chartres, Bishop of London

Admission is free and unticketed, doors open at 6.00pm.

Regulation, Freedom and Human Welfare
St Paul’s Cathedral
20th October 2009 6.30 – 8pm

What is the place of morality in the marketplace? The role of regulators has been heavily criticised, and there have been calls for much tighter regulation. At the same time, growing dependence of major financial institutions on gover...nment support has brought governments themselves back into the market place. Should they and regulatory bodies take a more prominent role in the market and, if so, how should they behave for the good? And what are the roles of personal and collective responsibility?

Panel:
Vince Cable MP, Deputy Leader of the Liberal Democrats and Shadow Chancellor
Brian Griffiths, Vice Chairman of Goldman Sachs International
Adair Turner, Chair of the Financial Services Authority
Nicholas Sagovsky, Canon Theologian, Westminster Abbey

Chair: Claire Foster, Lay Canon, St Paul’s Cathedral

Admission is free and unticketed, doors open at 6.00pm.

Work and human flourishing
St Paul’s Cathedral
13th October 2009, 6.30 – 8pm

The world of work has changed dramatically in the last decades, and would be unrecognisable to our parents and grandparents who imagined that new technology would set us free to enjoy a paradise of leisure. Now, faced with the prospect of worki...ng shorter hours and fewer days, some relish the idea of having more time with families and friends and for activities that bring quality to their lives, while others are terrified at the loss of status, money and the demands that keep them busy. What is the purpose of work in our lives, and how can we make a society in which it serves human flourishing as well as the economy?

Panel:
Phillip Blond, Director: Progressive Conservatism Project,
Giles Fraser, Canon Chancellor, St Paul’s Cathedral
Julia Neuberger, Rabbi and ethicist

Chair: Richard Chartres, Bishop of London

Admission is free and unticketed, doors open at 6.00pm.

This event is held on the cathedral floor and entry is via the main doors up the front steps of St Paul's Cathedral.

Money: a crisis of value?
St Paul’s Cathedral
6th October 2009, 6.30 – 8pm

We have become used to describing human beings as consumers and to measuring our well-being in terms of economic advancement. At the same time, we have created an economic system that depends on perpetually rising house prices and cheap credit in... order to sustain it. The financial crisis is ultimately the product of millions of individual decisions, not just economic policy or regulatory failure. To what extent is it about something deeper than money, and what are the implications for us as a society going forward?

Panel:
Catherine Cowley, Christian Ethics, Heythrop College
Andrew Dilnot, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Oxford University
Paul Tucker, Deputy Governor, Bank of England
John Micklethwait, Editor-in-Cheif of The Economist

Chair: Richard Chartres, Bishop of London

Admission is free and unticketed, doors open at 6.00pm.

St Paul's Cathedral
31st March, 2009, 11am - 12.30pm, doors open at 9.00am.

On the eve of the G20, St Paul's is hosting a high level debate about the moral questions raised by the dramatically changing world we find ourselves in.

Can opportunities for society's good come from the economic crisis? Has there been a disco...nnection between morality, policy-making and practice? What are the prospects for remaking the global order, rebuilding financial systems and re-establishing trust? How will a new global order actively include development goals and address climate change?

Those on the platform will include a very senior member of the Cabinet, and the debate will be open to questions from the audience.

Doors open at 9am. Members of the public are invited to attend this event. Because it is a high-security event, no one will be admitted without photo ID in the form of passport or driver's licence, and no large bags, rucksacks or suitcases can be brought into the cathedral. Please be prepared to have your bags searched.

This event is the first in the St Paul's Institute 2009 major programme, Money, Integrity and Wellbeing, which continues in the autumn.
