James

James Hello. At just 31 I had Open Heart Surgery to correct an ASD (hole in the heart). Unbelievable that I've lived all my life with a 4.6cm hole in my heart and been completely unaware of it. The hole was discovered in December 2008 and by April this year I'd had it corrected. All going fine now and a pretty impressive ...scar to show off! I'd be happy to answer any questons that anybody might have. Thanks.

Hi All, If any of you are on warfarin then you should have a look at this. A possible replacement drug which according to everything I have read so far would mean no more blood testing and worrying about your levels. But there is no mention anywhere wheth...er it would work for those of us who have prosthetic valves. It s...eems to be mainly concerned with hip and knee surgery (short- term) drug therapy. If you learn any more let the rest of us know. Just click on the link. xx

From one of our nurses:

"Dabigatran (Pradaxa) is one of a new class of drugs called direct thrombin inhibitors. It works by blocking the enzyme thrombin, which is central to the clotting process. This drug, like warfarin, can reduce the risk of blood clots.

It's considered a good alternative to warfarin and may one day replace warfarin. The advantage of dabigatran over warfarin is that it can be given as a fixed dose without the need for frequent blood tests. ... See More

It's also thought that dabigatran is less likely to interact with other medications.

Dabigatran is currently only recommended as treatment to help reduce the risk of blood clots for adults who have surgery to replace their hip or knee joint.

More research is needed on Dabigatran for long term use and also for other conditions such heart valve problems and people who have had a replacement valve.

However it's hoped that this medicine will eventually be prescribed to people who have a heart condition."

Hope that's helpful!

British Heart Foundation How much salt are you eating? We know you don't add it to food as much anymore, but check those food labels and make sure you're only having the recommended maximum of 6g a day...

www.bhf.org.uk
A study in the British Medical Journal suggests high salt intake is associated with significantly greater risk of both stroke and cardiovascular disease.

I went to Cardiac rehab after my heart attack 2 years ago. After the initial 8 weeks we have an extended 20 week course. We have combined this with an over 50's exercise class. So we have been training together through rehab and beyond. Some of the members have been going for 5 years.
It's a great way to keep fit and keep in touch. And keep contact with people who have shared your experience. Make the effort you won't regret it.
