Buy Nothing Christmas

Moto Juku

Moto Juku I spend valuable time seeking, purchasing, sending some unecessary crap and in return, the same thing is happening to the receiver of this crap. Gifting should occur because you want to and not because you have to. I have stopped doing this exercise for the last two years.

Kyle M Denholm I agree totally. This year instead of spending a bunch of money on things that people dont NEED, we made gifts (i am a homebrewer) and as a family we are all going to "Greenfield Village Holiday Nights" in Dearborn, MI and the Henry Ford Museum. We are making memories, not supporting cheap imports from Wal-Mart! Way to go!

Candiece Nicole Miller-Barnthouse Buy nothing Christmas.... hmmm as radical as it is, I rather like this idea! Christmas has become this absurd buying frenzy and most of us have lost sight of the "reason for the season".

Sally Hmmmm, thought the point was not to 'boycott' Christmas, moreso to boycott the pathetic consumer overspend! Get back to a basic Christmas folks, do something nice for people and not to play the 'I've spent more on my kids than you' one-up-manship!

Andree Collier Zaleska Have a look at this great model for building community and supporting each other in hard times: The Common Security Club. Join us on FB and write to request our free materials: andree@commonsecurityclub.org

These are uncertain times. The economic crisis has reminded us of our vulnerabilities: Debt, foreclosure, evaporating savings, rising costs, job insecurity. We can face these changes alone – or come together. What is a Common Security Club? A place to: • Come together to grapple with our personal security in a rapidl...y changing world. • Learn about the root causes of our economic and ecological challenges. • Explore ways to increase our personal/economic security through mutual aid and shared action. • Build on what we have together – and strengthen the institutions that we all depend on. • Make friends, find inspiration, have fun, and strengthen community. • Be part of a national movement of common security clubs that are connected to religious, civic, labor and small business organizations – working to transform the economy so that it works for everyone. Three Components of a Club LEARNING: Through popular education tools, videos and shared readings, participants increase their understanding of the larger economic forces on our lives. What is our vision for a healthy sustainable economy? MUTUAL AID – LOCAL ACTION: Through stories, examples, web-based resources, a workbook and mutual support, participants reflect on what makes them secure. What can we do together to increase our economic security at the local level? SOCIAL ACTION: Many of our challenges won’t be solved through personal or local mutual aid efforts. They require us to work together to press for larger state, national and even global changes. Coming together, what can we do to reclaim our economy from the casino capitalists? Starting Common Security Clubs – We Can Help! • Clubs typically are 10-20 adults who commit to meet for 5-6 initial facilitated meetings and then discuss whether to continue. • The CSC Network provides a detailed Facilitator’s Guide, and coaching and support by phone. • Anyone comfortable leading a group can facilitate a Club. • The model works well in churches and temples, workplaces, unions, neighborhood associations, classrooms—any place where people create community. We can help with this process. Contact Andrée Zaleska at andree@commonsecurityclub.org for more information, or to receive the full curriculum. The CSC is a project of the Institute for Policy Studies and On the Commons.

Andree Collier Zaleska

Andree Collier Zaleska I very much enjoy Christmas: the tree, my children, candlelight service on x-mas Eve. It has been much improved by my increasing commitment to giving only small, fun gifts from thrift shops, or gifts of homemade food. While I still buy presents for the family's children, I am increasingly able to explain the"less is m...ore" concept of the holidays to my boys (8 and 11).

Stuart Graeme Godwin

Stuart Graeme Godwin The date Dec 25th is really the first day the Sun rises upwards after its 3 days of being at it's lowest point (in the northern Hemisphere). The season is really the celebration of the Winter Solstice, the end of darkness and the begining of new Sunlight. ALL the extra religious conotations hijacked upon and on to this... simple phenomenon, caused by the Planets tilt, and orbit around it's Sun are Bollocks, and should not be recognised, supported or condoned.
Hapiness and Good Will should be year round. S;)

Lisa Andersson I haven't celebrated christmas in years. i can hardly remember the last time i got a christmaspresent, or gave one. but i'm actually starting to miss it... i think i want to celebrate it this year, it was so long ago. i will keep it cheap though. the people i know would just get angry with me if they knew i spent lots ...of money on them :p they want me to save instead. I think people should celebrate christmas every 3 or 4 years. every year is too much. you wont get a chance to miss it then.

Amber Spread knowledge and understanding! Not hate and fear! This should not be about "Boycotting Christmas", but about spreading love!! Homemade gifts, learning about different Yule time traditions around the world, this time of year is about family and friends!! Celebrate however you like as long as it makes you happy!
