I look after my husband who has Friedreich's Ataxia. I do not get 1 day off. I have my own disabilities....Degenerative Disc n faucets, Fibromyalgia, Ostochrondritis, Hypoglycaemia n Migraines. We are on Direct Payments but only get so many hours a week. My health has been deteriating for a while but everytime we ask f...or more help or an assessment for me for my own probs it always seems to be oh we will make an appointment for next week but unfortunately next week never comes. Even when I am ill I have to get up n see to my husband...when I struggling to walk etc.Read more

You have a legal right to an assessment in your own right, as both a carer and a person with your own disabilities. If the council are not giving you one, they are breaking the law. Have you thought about contacting your MP, that usually gets them moving.

This is a hard one. What has changed is that we are getting broader support so it is not just a carers' chairty that is saying it, but MPs, LGA and with backing of the Mirror.

uum but some employers do not take responsibility to the staff who need it and can leave it too late for the stressed carer struggling to do two jobs. !

I do hope at least something will change for the better for all of you dedicated carers. I still won't get any finiancil help as my husband had to stop work suddenly six years ago and he is younger than me so because I am a pensioner I don't get carers allowance. My state pension is just 55p a week!!! My husband who I care for isn't pension age yet.

It's the hardest job in the world, but parents caring for disabled children face a shameful lack of support. And, says ROSA MONCKTON, whose daughter has Down's, it's driving some to breaking point - and even murder.

What an EXCELLENT link ......very interesting to see that both the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Oppostion have or have been in a Carer Role ...BUT it still begs the question WHY ARENT THEY DOING MORE ..TO HELP OR PREVENT SITUATIONS OF CARER POVERTY AND CARER AND DISABILITY ABUSE????

How many more people (carers and there families) have to have headlines like this ...this is the second in a matter of months...To...o start with they want to Ban fireworks to organized event only...and What do the Goverment do...nothing!!! The Police see vunerable people whom are in need of help to fight this SICKING sport as a nuisance. Instead they would sooner sit in a layby doing motorists.Read more

i agree and how about making inciting disability hatred illegal The Sun and the Daily Mail incite it every time they insinuate that most people on disability benefits are scroungers or fraudsters If other groups were treated like this by the press there would be a public outcry its DISCRIMINATION

Yes I totally agree Jayson and Elizabeth, to many of these media moguls see Carers as Scroungers and I would suggest the Editors of these 'Papers' are made to go and Care for someone with major disablity for at least a month before they go shooting there mouths off, dictating to the public there journalist opinions. Make sure they have £53 p.w to ... Read morelive on and pay the bills and feed themselves. Also I would suggest that Carers Charities give a truthfull account of what its like to be in a similar situation to that of Fiona Pilkington through the media as they are a very important tool to get through the the general consensus, and ALSO 2 days a year for highlighting the Carers Cause is NOWHERE NEAR ENOUGH!! Surely there is someone HIGH PROFILE ENOUGH to recruit to help fight our cause!!! People power won the right for the Gurkhas ...!!!

Carers UK Carers UK welcomes the decision from Gillian Merron, Public Health Miniser to make carers a priority group for the H1N1 vaccination. We received a letter from the Minister stating, "... people and carers living in close contact with individuals whose immune systems may be compromised due to disease, or treatment such as chemotherapy" will be the first to be vaccinated with the H1N1 swine flu vaccine".
