After a series of concerts in Poland and Germany, Award Winning opera singer Valerian Ruminski will be performing lunchtime recitals in Christ Church Cathedral on November 19th and 21st, as well as singing in Opera Ireland’s 2009 production of the Verdi classic 'Macbeth' November 14th, 16th, 18th, 20th, and 22nd at The... Gaiety Theatre, Dublin.

Valerian is a graduate of the Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia and of SUNY-Buffalo. A true basso cantante, his bold and powerful vocal lyricism and remarkable coloratura has created world-wide recognition for this exceptional talent. An excellent musician and creative interpreter, he has performed with many of the great opera companies in the US and abroad including The Metropolitan Opera, New York City Opera and Opera Ireland. He can be heard on the Naxos label release of 'Night at the Opera' with other singers who have debuted at the Metropolitan Opera. Valerian recently portrayed Lord Walton in the highly acclaimed Metropolitan Opera high definition broadcast of 'I Puritani' starring Anna Netrebko in 2007.

Valerian is the recipient of many prestigious grants and awards and has performed the roles of Figaro (Le Nozze di Figaro), Ferrando (Il Trovatore), Sparafucile (Rigoletto) and Colline (La Boheme) among others. He is an Adjunct Professor of Voice at Westchester Community College, NY.

For his recital in Christ Church Cathedral, Valerian will be performing ‘Voli Colla Sua Tromba’ from Ariodante; ‘Si Trai Ceppi’ from Berenice and ‘Leave Me Loathsome Light’ from Semele as well as other pieces by Handel. Entrance to the recitals is included in admission to the cathedral.

Valerian will be accompanied on the piano by Mairead Hurley on November 19th; and by Deborah Kelleher on the 21st of November. Mairead has worked for Opera Ireland every season since 1996 and has a repertoire of some sixty operas to date. Her work with RTE includes the RTE Proms, RTE Naxos recording of Aida, miscellaneous recitals and regular work with both the NSO and the RTE Concert Orchestra. Mairead performs regularly in recital throughout the country and has also officiated at many music festivals and Masterclasses. In May of 2008 Mairead was appointed to the staff of the Royal Irish Academy of Music where she now works as a repetiteur.

The Magic of Mendelssohn!

To celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Felix Mendelssohn, the Hibernian Orchestra will be giving a concert in Christ Church Cathedral on Saturday 14 November 2009 at 20.00hrs. The concert will feature a performance of the composer's popular violin concerto by Cora Venus Lunny, descr...ibed by broadcaster Gay Byrne as 'one of the most extraordinary talents Ireland has ever produced'. The Hibernian Orchestra will be performing Mendelssohn’s overture from ‘The Hebrides’ and his Violin concerto in E Minor, as well as Beethoven’s symphony no. 2 in D. The orchestra will be conducted by John Finucane, and tickets will be available at the door on the night.

Tickets €15, concessions €10, children (under 12) €5

Parking is available in Jurys Inn car park, opposite the Cathedral.

To celebrate the 95th anniversary of the foundation of Cumann Gaelach na hEaglaise in 1914, the Culture Committee of Christ Church Cathedral in assocation with the Cumann, is delighted to announce a series of lunchtime lectures to be held during the month of November 2009. All lectures are free of charge and are open t...o all. The lectures, in English, will last 25-30 minutes, and will be followed by a short discussion, at which contributions in Irish will be most welcome.

Hilary Dickinson Guter will give an organ recital in the cathedral on Saturday November 7 2009, at 13.15 hrs. Hilary received her early music education in the College of Music, Dublin, where she studied organ with Peter Sweeney and piano with Roy Holmes. She holds performing and teaching diplomas in organ and piano. Sh...e graduated from Trinity College with an Honours Degree in Music where she was Organ Scholar for two years. Hilary also was Assistant to Peter Sweeney in Christ Church Cathedral for one year.

In 1985 she moved to Amsterdam to further her organ studies with Piet Kee and subsequently with Jos Vander Kooy. She holds a Docentus Musicus in Theory and Organ Performance from the University of Leeuwarden.She has performed solo recitals while living in the U.S. and Canada, including the Reil Organ at Redeemer College (Ontario) and the premiere of Robert Jones’ Mass for Choir and Organ in Redpath Hall, Montreal. She was choir and instrumental accompanist (organ and piano) in Calvin College (Michigan), Portland State University (Oregon), Western Washington University and McGill University (Montreal).On returning to Ireland, she has focused on church music and is currently serving as Director of Music for St. Brigids, Stillorgan and All Saints, Blackrock. Hilary was the accompanist for the Let’s Go Singing Studio (2004-2006) with Maire Ledwith-Butler, which included performances in the N.C.H, Bank of Ireland Arts Centre, Pro-Cathedral, R.T.E. and Hungary. Since 2006, she has performed on the Cathedral organs of Waterford, Armagh, Derry, Kildare and Christ Church, Dublin.

For her recital in the cathedral, Hilary will be performing Praeludium in e Minor by Bruhns; Balletto del Granduca by Sweelinck; Ciacona in c Minor by Buxtehude; 1st Sonata, Opus 42 by Guilmant, and Prelude and Fugue in G Major by Bach. Entrance to the concert is included in admission to the cathedral.

The Eucharist setting is Gounod's Messe No 5 Seminaires - Messe Breve in C. The soloists include Nadja Knop, soprano, Katja Becker, Alto, Julian Gerst and Tony Ulrich, Organists.

Jason Hawkins from Manchester, England, will give a piano recital in the cathedral on Saturday 17 October 2009 at 13.15hrs. He recently graduated from Chetham's School of Music with the Michael Abraham Piano Prize and is continuing his studies at the RNCM with the world renowned Russian concert pianist Dina Parakhina. ...In 2006 Jason
achieved one of the highest marks in the UK for his DipABRSM Performance Diploma as well as being a finalist in the "Ryszard Bakst Chopin Prize". Throughout his career Jason has won countless prizes for his vibrant performances and was broadcast on the BBC radio three Breakfast Show in 2008 playing solo repertoire. Jason also has worked as a voluntary musical director and pianist for a Lancashire based
theatre group as well as raising money for several charities including
“Macmillan Cancer Care”, “Friends of Chernobyl’s Children” and “The Booth Homeless Centre”. He was recently appointed the resident organist of St Mary's Church in Droylsden.

For his recital in the cathedral Jason will be performing Bach Prelude and Fugue No. 22 BWV. 867; Liszt Variations on a Theme of Bach Weinen, klagen; Chopin Etudes: Op. 10 No. 1, Op. 10 No. 4, Op. 10 No. 5;
Chopin Polonaise Ab Major Op. 53; Scriabin Etude Op. 8 No. 12. Entrance to the concert is included in admission to the cathedral.

This visit has been organised in co-operation with the Association of Iconographers of Ireland, and all are welcome to observe the icon wriitng process. The usual entrance charges apply.

and grounds will be closed. All services on those days will be
transferred to St. Werburgh's church, Werburgh Street. There will be no choral evensong on those dates, just evening prayer at 17.00 hrs. This is another great chance to visit St. Werburgh'...s which will be open daily from 09.45 until 17.15hrs. While there will be no admission charge to visit St. Werburgh's, all donations received will go towards the restoration of this beautiful church.Read more

Night will take place in the cathedral tomorrow night (Friday 25 September). We will
be open from 6pm until 10pm, with tours at 7, 8 and 9pm. Numbers are
limited so come early! We will also have music from our organist

Nisse. All culture night events ...are free, and last year over 3000 people visited the
