Researchers are trying to answer that question through several studies that intend to take emotions out of an angry debate between animal welfare groups and producers.

ChickenOut Four weeks and counting – chickens need you!

Over a third of MPs have now signed our parliamentary motion on chicken welfare, EDM 581. Just 26 more signatures will take us to our target of 300 and ensure that this EDM will be recorded in the House of Commons as a main parliamentary motion for this year - but we only ha...ve until 18th November to achieve it.

Visit Compassion in World Farming’s website at http://action.ciwf.org.uk/ea-campaign/clientcampaign.do?ea.client.id=119&ea.campaign.id=4070 to see whether your MP has signed, and to ask for their urgent support if not.

ChickenOut The 39 Days Campaign tour has now come to an end. At 39 days, a typical intensively-reared chicken has reached slaughter weight, and its life and our blog has come to an end. Over its short life, the chicken endured lameness, overcrowding, exhaustion and painful ammonia burns. It never had the opportunity to enjoy fres...h air or natural daylight. Visit http://www.chickenout.tv/ to read all 39 days and find out what happens next...

Around 800 million chickens are slaughtered in the UK each year. It is estimated that around 90% of these chickens are reared intensively. Tackling the vested interests of this multi-million pound intensive farming

ChickenOut Defra has announced plans to review the law on stocking densities for meat chickens to bring them in line with new EU standards, allowing more birds to be crammed into an already unacceptably small area. We urgently need your help to stop this. Please send an email to Defra today urging them not to abandon their curren...t stocking density at http://www.chickenout.tv/political/lobby-uk-government.html.

Hello Zoe. Thank you for asking us about the Manchester tour date. As you may have seen the weather was extremely bad on the day. This caused the stand to be a health and safety problems, as well as potentially damaging the equipment and leaflets. Unfortunately the team had to pack up the stand by late morning.

We were all very disappointed to not be able to complete the full day in Manchester and we are sorry for anyone who was disappointed to not have been able to support us in Manchester.

Hello Lee and Thomas.

Unfortunately we will not be able to visit Lincoln during this tour. We have only had the time to visit 11 cities during this tour. Hopefully we will be able to visit more cities again on any future tours we may plan for the campaign.

ChickenOut Our very own Eloise Shavelar said "The proposed legislation would mean a huge step backwards for UK poultry welfare." She added that by supporting the EU directive the UK would be "effectively giving the green light to further intensification of chicken farming".

Yes it does generally, especially if they're pets rather than commercial...we've had three hens for about 4 months now - fantastic personalities, I'd thoroughly recommend keeping hens.

I have 10 wonderful hens, Warrens mainly, and they are no trouble at all. I am in a village setting with other houses all around. But I have made a point of not having a cockeral, so no-one would even know they were here. In the UK, I would have to register with Defra once I had a certain amount. I think it's over 20.
