Andrew Parkinson

Andrew Parkinson Just been for my h1ac screening at a brand new local clinic and after an hour past my appointment time and still waiting I went low and (stupidly) didn't have anything on me. I asked at reception but the cafe had closed and they didn't have a vending machine. D'oh! I was obviously low as I tend to get a little wobbly o...n my feet and when I asked for a drink the receptionist brought me water! It's like she had no idea she was working in a diabetes clinic. After I explained she did bring me a cup of sweet tea though. Woo, free tea! (I think I actually said that *shame*)

They had lost my blood though so I have to go and give more tomorrow. Which is great because I just luuuurrrve fasting and giving blood ;-)

What information about our medicines do we need if we are going to make informed decisions about our medicine taking? There is surprisingly little consensus on this very important question. But what we ...

Jackie Moore

Jackie Moore Hi
Could you recommend any research that is available regarding Hypo mamgament in hospitals. I see you have recently been taking part in research to find out how patients feel about their treatment in hospitals with regards to hypo management- has any of this been printed/published yet? is there anything else out ther...e.
I work on a diabetes ward and am planning to write anassignment about this. I know things are not managed as they should be in many areas but need the research to compare how it should be delt with to how it is (poorly) delt with.

All help appreciated
J

Thanks for your comment. There is a limit to what a 3-year-old can take in about diabetes, however here is some information on how to 'Teach Your Tot About Diabetes': http://bit.ly/6EFZpf

If you are supporting member of Diabetes UK, you can also receive Tadpole Times - a publication for young children with diabetes. You can become a supporting member at: http://www.diabetes.org.uk/join.... See More

For parents, we would recommend the following:... See More
1. 'Diabetes Through The Looking Glass' by Rachel Besser - (about kids of all ages) http://bit.ly/6u9oAp
2. Ragnar Hanas' book on Type 1 in kids, which is a bit more like a text book: http://bit.ly/7aYqnT

Hope that helps and good luck!

Leanne Rose

Leanne Rose Hi Everyone,
Sugars have been on the high side for the last few days. Just tested it now and it was 21.1mmol. So done a correction dose but it says only to do 1.25units as i still have over 5 units on board. But the insulin on board NEVER brings it down to my target of 7.5mmol!! Just had to do a correction dose with my... insulin pen and part of me is wishing i was still on injections. It was sooooo much easier! ANy advice would be appreciated!

from my experience ive found the higher my bloood sugar is the more i need to get the corrective right, by the "rules" gettin from 18 to 6 i wod take 6 units, but i need at times double that to bring my sugars down, and when higher than 18 takes even more, sorry that was a bit long winded, but what i mean is maybe you need to "play about" to find out what works for you
good luck
xx

DO YOU KNOW THE CALCULATION TO WORK OUT WHAT YOU SHOULD BE YAKIN AS A CORRECTION DOSE - sorry about the caps... i can only ever remember the 1st , you need to add up all you insulin unit and divide it by 100 or 100 by the result. mine is 1 unit of insulin for every 1 above ... so i wouldhave to do 14 ... if that helps i no its a bit lae !!!
