Drug Policy Alliance As the drug czar works on his blueprint for U.S. drug policy, it's up to us to make sure he abandons not just the rhetoric, but the reality of the drug war. Tell him the federal government should stop using the criminal justice system to deal with drug issues:

Sam Pow - Continued from below -
The fear mongering of the war on drugs and the
disintigration of communities that it causes are essential for preventing the
oppressed majority in this country from rising up and demanding their fair
share. Racism, in part fueled by the war on drugs is what allows the richest
country in the world to... get away with not providing adequate healthcare,
housing, employment and education to all of its people.
Kudos to DPA for doing such a great job of connecting the dots between the
struggles against racism, for women's rights, immigrant rights, veterans
rights, LGBT rights, disabled rights and drug user's rights. Uniting these
movements will facilitate more victories than just ending prohibition. It will
liberate, empower and enfranchise us all.

Paltrow's comments start to hint at how the
ruling class benefits from prohibition. It goes beyond the profit motive of the
prison industrial complex. The united states is the most unequal society in the 1st world. The
top 20% of households control 83% of the nations wealth. Average CEO pay
is 431 t...imes average worker salary. During the worst economic crisis since the
great depression the government showed their true colors by choosing to bail
out the very bankers and brokers that caused the debacle instead of the
ordinary people who were losing their livlihoods and housing.

During the closing plenary Lynn Paltrow brought
it to a whole nother level. Throughout the conference we were hearing again and
again that racism is underlying the war on drugs but Ms. Paltrow was the only
speaker I heard take a stab at what is underlying racism. Her comments about
racism being a too...l to divide and conquer us and distract us from collectively
pursuing basic rights like access to healthcare, adequete housing, education
and employment was the closest I heard anyone get to answering the question
that was reverberating through the halls of the convention center all week:
Why, inspite of towering mountains of evidence that it is a complete and utter
failure, why despite a preponderance of information indicating that it does
drasticly more harm to society than drugs themselves do, why does the war on
drugs persist?

Sam Pow Thanks so much for the fantastic conference. It left me inspired and galvanized to become more involved in the struggle to abolish prohibition and end mass incarceration. I was quite impressed by the level of analysis throughout the conference particularly during the opening plenary. I love the way Ira Glasser and Etha...n Nadelmann placed the war on drugs in historical context as the current stage in a progression of racial oppression that started with slavery evolved into Jim Crow and has now grown into the mass incarceration of people of color.
