ONE OF THE BIGGEST LIVE / CLUB NIGHTS OF THE YEAR!
Nu-rave misfits HADOUKEN! confirm 2 shows for Jersey Live presents, 28th November!
‘The Prodigy’s energy, Dizzee’s vocal delivery and Bloc Party’s indie-dance’ MIXMAG
Following on from the runaway success of Jersey Live 2009, which featured storming sets from the likes of Dizzee Rascal, Basement Jaxx and Kap Bambino, the festival organiser's are keen to keep their foot on the gas all the way up until next year’s event, and with Irish indie legends Ash completely selling out Jersey on October 31st, another memorable pair of shows is expected from Leeds-based nu-rave outfit Hadouken!
The band, who will be stopping off on the island as part of a nineteen-date tour, the band, have been amassing a cult following since their formative days as a band, when they received one of their first radio plays by Mikes Skinner (aka The Streets) on Radio One, as well as receiving multiple plays on MTV2 and the NME Chart Show.
The band have won many high-profile fans in the process of their ascent, not least Radio One’s Zane Lowe, for whom they stood in as guest presenters of his flagship indie show, and they have remixed singles for The Sugababes, and toured with the likes of Late of the Pier and Jersey Live favourites The Whip and Does It Offend You Yeah? Their unique and energetic blend of grime, electro, hip hop and indie influences saw Mixmag, the world’s leading dance music magazine, describe them as having ‘The Prodigy’s energy, Dizzee’s vocal delivery and Bloc Party’s indie-dance’ (a perfect Jersey Live mix if ever there was one).
Having won over an army of young fans with their blend of rave and rock influences, and socially-conscious lyrics (commenting on everything from bing-drinking to credit-culture), the band will get a chance to showcase their talents twice whilst in Jersey at Liquid nightclub, performing an early evening set for Under-18s only, whilst the second show sees them perform to Liquid’s more traditional adult crowd. Event organiser Warren Le Sueur said, ‘Hadouken are one of the countries most exciting bands right now, and to have them performing in Jersey as part of their UK touring schedule goes to show that the island is becoming a recognised part of the British live music scene. We’re really happy that we were able to get the band to perform an extra under-18’s show; it’s great to give Jersey’s youth the chance to see what’s going to be a fantastic gig.’

INTERVIEW WITH HADOUKEN by CHRIS BELL (Jersey Live Press Officer)
Since forming in Leeds in 2006, ‘grindie’ five-piece Hadouken have been setting the UK alight with their riotous blend of rave, grime and rock influences, touring with the likes of The Prodigy, Does It Offend You Yeah? and Late of the Pier, and have been hailed by such luminaries as Radio One’s Zane Lowe – who once recruited the band to stand in as guest presenters of his show. Winning an army of young fans with their socially-conscious lyrics concerning Britain’s binge-drinking epidemic, credit culture, and just about any other topic that inspires them to set the world to rights, they are back with their latest EP, entitled M.A.D, with a newly-infused drum n’ bass element, darker and more fearsome than ever. As part of a hefty nineteen-date tour, they’ll be stopping off in the island to play under-18s and over-18s shows at Liquid this month for the newly-revived Jersey Live Sessions. Guitarist Dan Rice shared a few words with us ahead of the shows.
Have you visited Jersey before?
>
No, this is our first visit. Strangely enough, we seem to have quite a few fans there, and a lot were messaging us to ask us to come and play, so we’re looking forward to finally coming. I can’t say I know an awful lot about the island though.
You’ve got a new LP out soon. How has the music changed, and how have the new tracks gone down so far with audiences?
>
We’ve been slotting the new stuff into sets all year and played them throughout festivals in the summer. They’re really fast and heavy and fun to play and gone down really well. Sometimes playing a brand new track can be a bit of a chore, so to get an instant reaction is great.
You’ve mentioned in previous interviews that the lyrics have become less socially-conscious than your earlier work. Was that a conscious decision, to become less ‘preacy’?
>
Yeah, the new songs are lyrically a lot more abstract, and there’s less story-telling involved. They’re basically much darker, more aggressive and violent. We played some stuff like that in the past and we always enjoyed it, so it felt natural to move away from our old stuff and try something new. When we went into the studio we wanted to make something that would sound good live and be fun to play.
You’ve been criticised in the past for having an ironic take on grime music. How do you respond to that?
>
Well James (Smith, singer and songwriter) grew up producing grime music and releasing records on grime labels, so it’s not like we just heard it and thought it sounded cool or gimmicky. It’s something that we’re passionate about. Anyway, the new stuff is so far removed from that – we worked with the drum n’ bass producer Noisia on the new tracks – that I don’t think that could be a valid criticism anymore. Mind you, people will always find something to pick holes in.
What can the Jersey crowd expect from your shows?
>
We’ll be playing the same set for the under-18s and over-18s shows – we generally pick a set that feels right and stick to it for the whole tour. It’s going to sound a lot more live than the record as we’ve got a full band, but there will still be electronics, sampling and sequencers. It’s going to be loud and rowdy.
What musical direction do you see yourselves moving in future?
>
It’s too early to say really. We’ll tour and play the songs from the new album, decide what we liked and didn’t like and take it from there. Whatever we do will be a natural change.
How long did the new album take?
>
James did the first demo in September last year, and then we spent time writing over Christmas, and went into the studio with Noisia in February this year.
What was your favourite gig of 2009?
>
Supporting The Prodigy in Tokyo last month was amazing,
What’s been the best record you’ve heard in 2009?
>
It’s only been out for a week, but the new Tubelord record is great. I’d heard lots of their stuff that I liked; I was really hoping they’d live up to expectation, and they did.
If you had a superpower what would it be? You can choose from flight, invisibility, X-Ray Vision, and teleportation…
>
If you could fly as fast as Superman, you wouldn’t need teleportation. Invisibility and X-ray vision would be too tempting; you’d get yourself into all sorts of trouble. Definitely flight.
When was the last time you got in a fight?
>
I haven’t had a fight for a long time. Although the band had a drunken scrap on tour in Norwich with some bouncers outside the pub. Luckily I’d left half an hour before it happened, but I paid a visit to the hospital.
Plans for 2010?
>
The album comes out in January, then we’ll have a massive tour in February, then we’ll generally play anywhere in the world that will have us!
