Folger Shakespeare Library Congratulations to actor Tony Nam (currently playing Don Pedro in "Much Ado", an amazing puppeteer in "Measure for Measure") and wife Nora on the birth of their son today. Jeffrey Scott did a great job stepping in as Don Pedro for today's performances. Tony returns to the role Wednesday.

THIS WEEK: Theaters are constantly trying to think of ways to make Shakespeare new. Sometimes it works, sometimes it's Secret Agent "Richard II."

Folger Shakespeare Library From Friday's Weekend section in the Washington Post, Folger Theatre director Timothy Douglas shares why he couldn't imagine setting his upcoming production of "Much Ado" anywhere but modern-day DC and our Caribbean community. Previews start tomorrow!

Washington is nearly half a world away from the Italian city of Messina, where Shakespeare's "Much Ado About Nothing" takes place. But in a new adaptation of the Bard's romantic comedy, Leonato's court is coming to the nation's capital.

Folger Shakespeare Library Show some love! Vote the Folger as DC's best spot for readings and share your comments about why Folger Poetry and PEN/Faulkner readings here are so special (for me it's the good acoustics and fabulous brownies at the receptions afterwards). Plus write in the Folger for museum, theater, and music. Ends today, October 16!

Reluctant lovers Beatrice and Benedick conceal their attraction behind a merry war of wit in Shakespeare’s romantic, clever comedy. From Washington City Paper's 2009 Fall Arts Preview:

"With any luck, Timothy Douglas's Caribbean update of Much Ado About Nothing will make an even more joyful noise. There’s reason to hope: Douglas made dazzling work out of Robert O’Hara’s uproarious Insurrection: Holding History at Theater Alliance a couple of years back, and his no-nonsense résumé includes the world premiere of August Wilson’s final play, Radio Golf. Bonus good sign: The guy who’ll be playing Benedick, the fast-talking, Beatrice-bashing smart-mouth brought to his knees by love? That would be Howard Overshown, a veteran of shows as diverse as Dael Orlandersmith’s Yellowman and Sarah Ruhl’s Passion Play." —Trey Graham

Nothing was wasted by old bookbinders, which is why it's not surprising to find discarded bits of text reused to make the bindings and covers of moldering tomes at the Folger Shakespeare Library. When old books are conserved, those secrets come to light.
