Amnesty International in partnership with The Law Society, Palestinian Solidarity Society and People and Planet present...
'An audience with Michael Mansfield QC':
A discussion and debate session with Michael Mansfield QC about the launch of his new book, his career in Law and the importance of universal human rights wit...hin the context of terrorism. Talking on the legality of war and apartied in Palestine.
A bit of background information:
Michael Mansfield, QC, the best-known brief at the Bar, says in an extract in his autobiography in The Times that it was "utterly reasonable" for Diana, Princess of Wales, to fear for her safety and suppose that she was under surveillance.
Elsewhere in the book, which spans many of the most high-profile trials of the last three decades, Mr Mansfield gives his views on the legal profession, the state of the criminal law and on how he became a hated lawyer facing death threats whose mission was to fight for the underdog and pursue miscarriages of justice.
As well as representing those wrongly convicted of the IRA's Guildford and Birmingham pub bombings, Mansfield has represented: the Angry Brigade; the Price sisters; Brian Keenan; the Orgreave miners; James Hanratty (in posthumous appeals); those involved in the Israeli Embassy bombing; Stephen Lawrence's family; Michael Barrymore at the Stuart Lubbock inquest; Barry George at the inquest into the death of Jill Dando; the Bloody Sunday families; Arthur Scargill; Angela Cannings;[1] Fatmir Limaj, a Kosovo-Albanian leader prosecuted in The Hague; Mohamed al-Fayed in the inquest into the deaths of his son Dodi al-Fayed and Diana, Princess of Wales; and the family of Jean Charles de Menezes.
Mr Mansfield helped one of the defendants in the Angry Brigade trial in 1972, his first major case, dubbed "Britain's first urban guerillas." He broke new ground in challenging the handwriting experts - "in those days no-one questioned experts, especially not your own". He also found himself the subject of "whispers" that he was a "dangerous subversive."
All are welcome! It's a FREE event...
There will be a brief Q&A session at the end for all those eager to ask some challenging questions.
Hope to see many smiling faces...
