At the LDA's previous public information session, GCC asked the LDA and
Roads ACT to conduct a complete study of the traffic and parking issues
of the surrounding precinct and the likely impacts that would result
from this proposal. This meeting will present the findings of the
Traffic and Parking Study commissioned by the... LDA.

The block of land in question is between the shops and the schools in Kellaway Avenue Nicholls.

The
meeting will be held on Wednesday 18 November between 6.30 and 8.00 pm,
at the library in the Gold Creek School on Kelleway Avenue.

See gcc.asn.au for background information on the proposal.

Please note that this is not a GCC meeting - it is being held by the LDA.

Grant Tobias

Grant Tobias Shame on GC. The street lights on Anthony Rolfe were out of action due to a smash and I could finally sleep well at night without an annoying yellow light flapping around. Do I need to drive into another pole for a further week's peace?

Grant, GCC is not the local government - we are an ordinary community group. If you have a problem with light disturbance in your residence, you should contact the ACT Government's Canberra Connect on 132281.

Gungahlin Community Council We have a new definition from the ACT Government of a "mid-sized block" - 250 to 500 sq metres. Yep you read it right - 250 square metres is mid-sized! So Gungahlin guinea pigs the experiment continues...

At least the Block Sizes match the size of the GDE.

Gungahlin Community Council Poor broadband access in parts (most?) of Gungahlin is again in the news, mainly due to the efforts of local Russell Gillon. He and GCC's Alan Kerlin were interviewed on ABC Radio's 666 about the situation. Listen to the interview on our website, and feel free to tell us about your internet access problems here.

Recently Hackett residents complained about the daily log-jam at the
Phillip Ave/Majura Ave intersection, and the Gungahlin people rat-running
through their suburb. They're right, but the majority of their traffic comes from NSW commuters peeling off the
Federal Hwy at Antill Street, because Northbourne is clogged.
I first... floated a
cheap and simple solution for this problem in early 2007 (see our website) to place a Give Way sign on Phillip Ave
eastbound, giving right of way to the right turn into Majura. I’ve pursued it
with ACT Roads boss Tony Gill numerous times since, and with Hackett community representatives
several times but they’ve failed to support a trial. I believe this solution would
work and be far cheaper than the traffic lights being pursued, for a problem
that exists for just five hours a week. All I’m asking is that they give the
idea a trial for a few months, before going to the expense of traffic lights. There’s
nothing to lose.

Hi Patricia. I think you might be confusing this discussion on Majura Ave in Hackett/Ainslie with Majura Rd - different roads.

I think that many people won't try a simple solution, unfortunately, and just go for the traffic lights. Pity they won't give your idea a fair go and at least see for themselves if it has any merit. Typical!

My main concern about the proposed mosque in Nicholls is traffic congestion. Currently, we already have parking and traffic problems. The proposed location is not suitable at all. But if something needs to be built on that site, perhaps we could extend the Nicholls shops and parking - a newsagent with postal facilities... (seeing that the little red post box was vandalized between 26th and 28th June), a cafe, a dry cleaner, a pharmacy - that sort of shops. Also we need to realize that when Casey is populated, some of the residents from there will also use Nicholls shops and facilities on their way home from work etc.Read more

Gungahlin Community Council Alan Kerlin will be judging entries for the "Gungahlin Treasures" competition today. Look for info on how to buy this book in the next GunSmoke - out soon.

Donna

Donna Have heard that there is now plans possibly for a Mosque at Nicholls - at the same spot that was supposed to be for additional parking for the shops but isn't going to happen now/for the time being. Can this be clarified/confirmed?

Pretty slowly Craig.
What Andrew Barr was talking about pre-election was an "entertainment precinct", but it was without discussion and a bit concerning. We think these sort of things need to be integrated into the town centre rather than congregated somewhere else, with the traffic snarls that result from such clustering (think 2 servos across ... Read morefrom each other...).
But we are certainly pushing for the town centre to get a pub and cinemas. But at the moment the ACT Government seems more interested in building more "clubs" - pokies and Labor Clubs!

Gungahlin Community Council Last week the ACT Government sold a block of land next to the Harrison School for a childcare centre - auctioned for $800,000, to the Northside Community Service.
This was the end result of almost 3 years of lobbying since we first proposed the idea that Harrison and Franklin should have a childcare centre located next to the school. See the GCC website for more details.
