That's the problem when banking is a major industry.

Zimbabwe has seen better economic growth in the past 9 months than the UK has and i don't think splashing out taxpayers money for bailouts is helping.
Have a long term economic goal and then set smaller economic targets to achieve that goal.

No I'm afraid that despite as much as I would like to support lassie fare economics, the government bailing out big businesses is helping in the short term. We would be in a depression worse than the great depression if not for that. In the future however we need more regulation so these essential banks cannot fail, and less of our economy dependant upon them.

“This is a shocking indictment of NHS services for those who are dying," said the Liberal Democrat Shadow Health Secretary.
Mark

No wonder there are increasing calls for legalized assisted suicide. NHS wards should be reformed to be caring and more like a secular monestary or convent than the bog standard types they're currently are.

All people have the right to protection and the right to defend themselves (with force if necessary).
All of us are British and deserve equal treatment in this degree.
The divorce law is biased against men but when it comes to partner beating, i'm gonna have to agree with the feminists for once.

This is a matter of international importance and all organisations including public sector, religious institutions, charities, businesses etc should play their part.

For goodness sake, why this obsession with unity governments. Just look at Kenya and Zimbabwe...relationships get strained. Just let Karzai rule whatever part of Afghanistan he can and then transfer our troops to assist the Pakistan (who are actually doing quite well).

The ideal of a unity government is great in theory, but in practice, perhaps Mark's idea would show more useful results.

I am concerned that the majority of people making statements and voicing opinions about the recent ‘drug baron’ outpourings have failed to take into account the facts that we who advocate the legalisation of drugs do so with the proviso that these drugs are taken off the streets and into the hands of clinicians qualified to distribute ‘clean’ substances free from the miss-handling by on-street ‘drug barons’ and at a price/in a way which will enable ‘users’ to not have to make the lives of other citizens a misery through theft, burglary, muggings, etc..

This process has to some extent been tried and tested elsewhere in the world to the greater benefit to the majority of the populace. Switzerland is a good example of this.

When visiting Swiss cities it is very noticeable that drugs are currently off the street. Only a handful of illegally present persons are to be seen. Petty crime has been almost eliminated. Beggars are rarely if ever present. More than one Chief Constable in Britain has issued a statement promoting this method of ‘clean up’.

I advocated this procedure way back in the 1980s and was severely criticised by the same ignorant people who persist in miss-reading advice.

One day someone in the right position will take proper account of what we suggest and Britain may return to the countrywide safe situation of the pre-smack , pre-skunk era. All we need to do then is eradicate the Afghan poppy crop and the Colombian cocaine plantations, close down illegal drug factories wherever Interpol finds them and we are on the road to normality!

what I don't understand with this and i'm sure its been said, but what is the point of having experts that the government don't listen too an expert knows the facts the government are not experts in this matter, so it shows me that the government don't actually care about our health at all, i have read many research medical report on cannabis and ... Read more90% of it was saying how good for your health it is and the only reason they do not legalise it in anyway is because it would wipe out about 30% of the drug industry and how do they fight back with the bbc saying some mum injected thc who does that really!!!

This reccession will continue as long as confidence levels are low. The only way to increase confidence is PRIVATE SECTOR Job creation, and this can be done by offering tax credits to employers who are employing for the long term. As soon as unemployment drops from 8% to 5.5%, people will begin to feel confident about both spending and using banks... Read more ... Read morefully. This will decrease the governments expenditure on benefits etc which give no aspirational consideration for the individual's future, and allow for more money to be spent on a/ PRIVATE SECTOR job creation, b/ Positive stimulus rather than supporting falling banks or using QE to support our currency (not an overly constructive strategy in the long term), and finaly, c/ after the economy is able to stand on its own two feet again, infrastructure. The strongest weapons in the governments armory are fiscal and monetary policy, at the moment it is using monetary policy to the extreme, and doesn't seem to dare touch the fiscal policy in a constructive way, be this for political reasons or otherwise, but private sector job creation is the only route forwards to increase confidence and revitalise both the economy and the public's belief in economic longevity.

it's very simple. pubs are screwed because of cheap supermarket alcohol. so the solution is simple: increase alcohol duty for supermarkets and off-licenses. raise their prices so that they are more in line with those of pubs, whilst producing a handy revenue stream for the government
