Mark Shead This looks incredibly cool. I'd really like to get one of these. I'm going to wait a few weeks to see if it is just "cool new gadget" syndrome or if it is something I'd really want and use.

WikiReader is an electronic encyclopedia giving physical form to Wikipedia. Now you can take it with you wherever you go.

What do you mean a built in browser option? I know I can bring up in the browser. Do you mean there is a shortcut?

The advantage of this is it will work anywhere--not internet connection required. You could give this $99 device to kids in Africa and they would have the whole of Wikipedia in the palm of their hands. It doesn't have to be ... Read moreWikipedia either. You could create your own mediawiki installation of whatever content you want and export it out to this device.

Colleges could put textbooks on these, etc.

Mark Shead Let us never forget that no matter what great advances are on the future horizon, we could put lasers on sharks today.

It is deeply depressing that from amongst a list of alternatives whose achievements are up there in the realms of magic/fantasy, the one thing that humans are capable of right now is seen in the poll results as by far the least possible.

There is nothing like a bit of constructive sarcasm! I don't know about the police. Sharks aren't much of a problem in Kansas--lasers or not.

Mark Shead Moving to a place that gets mail at 9:30 instead of 3:30 is a nice change. I may resubscribe to the Wall Street Journal and the local newspaper if I get them in the morning instead of at the end of the day.

Mark Shead I just tried out TImes (an RSS newsreader for OS X) after hearing about it from FreelanceSwitch. Interesting, but it doesn't provide a single river of news--every feed is in its own spot on the page. I prefer having a way to see all the feeds in chronological order together.

Mark Shead Just upgraded to Snow Leopard. So far so good. It does free up quite a bit of space on the hard drive. One thing I'm really happy with is that it seems to be a lot better about shutting down. The OS can kill programs that used to hang on shutdown.

Mark Shead This is an amazing device! It is really incredible to watch exactly how your electricity is being used. There are still some bugs to work out in it, but I'm pretty happy with it and the company has been very responsive.

Scrap that idea - I wouldn't be able to install one in a rental place anyway. Will have to keep doing it the "old fashioned" way by tracking KwH via electricity bills.

@Ricky - Actually I think you could install it in a rental place as long as you have your own breaker box. There is a different company that makes something similar that doesn't require connecting wires--it watches the wheel turn in the meter and gets its calculations from there.

Mark Shead You know those people who wear a bluetooth headset all the time even when they aren't talking on the phone and have no chance of getting a phone call? Just imagine what would happen if you got them one of these. :)

Mark Shead If you ever need to test your internet speed, this is the place to do it. It tests upload, download and ping time. It also keeps track of your past results. That way if it seems like things are running slowly, you can see how your current results compare to the past and determine if it is your connection or something else.

Mark Shead Before you run out and by a piece of software, checkout http://alternativeto.net. It lets you select a commercial software title and then shows you all the different free software options. It is a great way to quickly see what free alternatives are available.
