On Friday (November 6, 2009) Grand Ayatollah Montazeri in a phone conversation with Mehdi Karoubi expressed his sadness over the events that happened for Karoubi and those who were accompanying him during the November 4th protest. According to a report by Tagheer news agency (Etemad-Melli’s official website), in this c...all Grand Ayatollah Montazeri while comforting Karoubi reminded some points and while expressing his regret because of the assaults on Mehdi Karoubi, said: “I am amazed that what kind of policy is this that confront people harshly like this even on a demonstration for November 4th (a government approved day for demonstration) and it is not clear after that election where they are trying to take the country.” At the end, Grand Ayatollah Montazeri prayed that God keeps the country safe from the bad events that are facing the country. In this phone conversation Mr. Karoubi while thanking this senior and prominent high ranked Shi’a scholar reminded that people took on the streets on November 4 to oppose tyranny that unfortunately thugs violently attacked women, men and youths like this. It is notable that during the November 4th demonstration, a group of plain clothes militia while directly shooting tear gas at Karoubi attacked him which resulted in two of his body guards being severely injured and hospitalised.Read more

The announcement of the Mojahedin of Islamic Revolution Organisation (reformist) regarding demand for public trial of Behzad Nabavi: The Mojahedin of Islamic Revolution Organisation while condemning the heavy sentences issued for some of defendants of the post-election events, demanded from the high rank authorities of... the judiciary to have public trial for Behzad Nabavi (a senior member of this organisation), as he also demanded so in his first court session, so that after all the injustices imposed on him and other detainees of post-election events over the past 5 months, they don’t suffer further injustice of not being able to publically defend themselves against unfair and untrue charges that were publically accused of having committed. The office of Tehran’s prosecutor by issuing a statement announce that Ali Tajerniya (former reformist member of the parliament and member of the Participation Front) and Seyyed Ebrahim Amini (senior member of the Etmaad-Melli party), two of the detainees of the post election events as well as Farhad Poladi, the France... Press reporter, were released on bail. According to the report by Mehr news agency, in this statement the office indicates that following the trial of Ali Tajerniya and Seyyed Ebrahim Amini at branch 26 of the Islamic court of Tehran they were released from prison after posting bails. Also by the approval of Abbas Jafari Dolat-Abadi, Tehran’s prosecutor Davod Miri and Mohammad Taghi Ramezan-Zade who had been arrested and imprisoned last Thursday during religious prayer ceremony at Shahab Tabatabaee’s house were released on bails. Further the statement points out the release of 30 of those detained during the November 4th event. On Thursday and Friday also some other people were released on bails.Read more

After the arrest of two students of the departments of electrical and computer engineering at Khajeh Nasir University, today November 7, 2009 students of this university went on an unprecedented hunger strike and protested in front of the university’s cafeteria and chanted “God is great” (as a symbol of resistance to t...he coup government). According to the reports that have reached BamdadNews in this protest students opposed arrests of their colleagues and announced that they would continue their protests until their release. Tehran’s chief of police in an interview with Mehr news agency announced that during the Nov 4th protests 109 people were arrested that 47 of them were released on bail and 62 of them after being charged were referred to the judiciary and then sent to prison. He also added that from those arrested 43 were men and 19 w...ere women. It is notable that before this interview both the head of the security forces and Tehran’s prosecutor mentioned that they did not know about the number of the arrested during Nov 4th protests.Read more

Last night, a number of parliament members visited Grand Ayatollah Bayat Zanjani who is currently in hospital as a consequence of his heart attack last week. Seyyed Mohammad Khatami, former president, in an interview said: “Senior authorities should accept that there is a crisis in the country. Also not only there should be the opportunity for all the views and ideas to be expressed freely, but also it should not be that all the resources and immunities be provided only for... a specific view which is only thinking about eliminating others, and everyone should be able to express their views.” He added: “We should not make decisions for people. We should not limit people’s votes and right to chose.” He also asked: “Why is it that today the constitution is being violated? Isn’t it that the constitution included the rights for political activities and assembly, expression of ideas and people’s free participation? The constitution clearly states the free and competitive elections as a right for the people and it is the responsibility of the authorities to respect and protect this right. Now if someone is protesting that this right was not honoured, should be confronted harshly and violently?” He added: “We should find out who are ignoring the law for their own benefit and those are the ones that should not be at center of power. This does not mean that they should be completely eliminated though...They should be able to express their views in a free society under the law and freedom of idea, freedom of expression and freedom of assembly...” He stressed: “If only one movement and political view gets all the power, then naturally what they call “unity” which to eliminate any different ideas, is not rational. They are calming that the unity is that whoever that does not agree with their views and is objecting to their acts and views should be eliminated no matter what and they also have all the resources to do this.” He stressed: “Anyone who is committed to the constitution and announces that is acting according to the constitution even if has different views should have all the rights that have been considered for a citizen including participating in elections, casting votes and etc...I think that we even should prepare the background for those who do not believe in the constitution but are acting to it accordingly to become more active in the society, be present and not to get eliminated. If we truly return to the rule of law and especially those who are the guardians of the law don’t interpret the law based on their own personal views and don’t ignore the constitution for the benefit if a particular political movement but be completely neutral and just, the constitution will be the most important reference that can create unity in our society despite all the different views.” He added: “We are still standing firm on our positions...In the Islamic Republic just as we defend Islam we are also defending people’s rights and votes. Those who are ignoring people’s votes and are willing to change them, are strangers to the revolution and the Islamic Republic; this is our tradition and way and our word is always this: let’s execute the constitution correctly.” At the end Khatami emphasised: “I think the problem is that some consider their views as those of Islam and revolution and consider their oppositions as anti-Islam and anti- revolution and therefore give themselves the permission to confront their oppositions as they wish.... I am stressing this clearly that eliminating those who are loyal to the revolution with these baseless accusations that is being followed by a particular movement is the biggest conspiracy against the Islamic Republic and its final outcome is pushing the social movements toward the movements that are fundamentally against the revolution.”Read more
