Nick Clegg, Leader of the Liberal Democrats, responding to the Prime Minister’s speech on Afghanistan this morning.

The Lib Dems should follow the example of Canada and many European NATO nations that are now withdrawing from combat missions, and instead will be providing humanatarian support.
Lib Dems should be the principled and practical party. The fact is that its a war that will extend longer than the WW1/2 and the public doesn't want more troops or ... Read morecivilian lives to be lost, doesn't have the appetite or money for this never ending war. You can't abandon the Afghan civilians if you ever genuinly did care about them, so you should put energy into supporting the UN humanatarian mission in helping with education, homes, clea water. This is what wins the hearts and minds of the people. You an't abandon the troops so make sure they're equiped for protection, but that does't mean more weapons and more soldiers.
Labour, Conservative and Lib Dem seem to simply take instructions from US, AND tell the British public that they have to support the war and make them feel those against it are traitors.
Instead the Lib Dem should be holding meetings round the country with British people of every race, religion and ethnic orgin, for war, against war, in the army etc. and with Afghan and Pakistan civilians and army to see how people feel and hat theit ideas are before making a final decission. The Lib Dems should responsibly say they are always open to reviewing the policy rather than trapping themselves into war.

Nick Clegg The Political Slot on Channel 4: The Liberal Democrat Party: Nick Clegg MP and Sarah Teather MP on how to stop your constituency being a safe seat for either the Conservatives or the Labour party.

I think the voting system is unfair in my area all i ever hear is a vote for lib dem is a wasted vote. There are many who would vote lib dem if they thought there vote counted, if you are in 3rd place the hard part is reaching enough votes so people think you have a chance of winning.

I am in the process of joining the libdems, and as a very disaffected former labour supporter and trade union activist, I have to say that I am actually inspired by the work of Sarah Teather.

I think that there really does have to be more attention paid to the work of an MP within the constituency, and the brief example given in the clip outlines how positively an MP can affect the lives of those who he/she represents.

Neil is right. When many look at the libdems they like alot of the policies, but are afraid to vote for them for fear of 'wasting' their say..... Read more

If only the message could be put across that it is an even bigger waste to vote for the status quo, or to abstain, simply out of a fear of change..

We moved a 10:10 motion at the last Ealing Council... it was passed in principle but the Tories watered it down!

Hows abouts Brown forms a UK government of national unity?

Also, this Professor Nutt thing is a disgrace. Govt makes decision, favours evidence which supports that decision. Fires the expert naysayers. Does it sound familiar? It's a good thing he's not investigating WMDS, though I'd still recommend he refrain from lone walks in the countryside.

Our governments stopped representing the people a long time ago. Now, they lead and we follow in subservience.

The whole thing is a mess.... there are areas where the government CAN'T poll because it has no access, allegations of corruption aside! Moreover, the Pashtun south has ridiculously low voter turn-out.

Honestly... until Afghanistan is unified and stabilised I'd say true democracy is a pipe dream.

I’m very pleased to have the chance to support this vigil. Hate crime of any kind is utterly abhorrent. In the years since the tragic murders in 1999, LGBT rights have come a long way – and we can all be glad of that progress. But violence committed against people simply because of their ethnicity, identity or orient...ation continues to exist.

The death of Ian Baynham is a reminder of how far we have to go in stamping out prejudice. But tonight’s vigil is inspiring proof that people throughout Britain will not accept this and that they’re prepared to stand up for decency and fairness – and with everyone who has been victimised or attacked simply for who they are. It’s fantastic that this vigil has been organised and I wish it every success.

I regularly ask for people’s views online about issues which matter to them – it’s a real opportunity for me to hear what you think and to respond. This week, I asked to hear your questions and views on the environment and climate change as we approach the Copenhagen Summit. Anyone can take part by submitting questions... to my Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/nickclegg) or on Twitter (http://twitter.com/nick_clegg).

Even in my Politics AS class (after a 1/2 term), people still can't place the name Nick Clegg. I'm sure this will change over the year but it shows how little the Lib Dems are even mentioned in the media.

I totally agree. It seems unfortunate the current two-party system can still isolate the third party from media coverage. Here's hoping the Lib Dems become the Official Opposition after next year's GE (a little more realistic than hoping for them to win).

Glad Lib Dems publically don't support Blair. The idea that that war criminal could be President of EU is a insult and disaster. The British people have never been more ashamed of our leader until Blair walked into the Iraq war against the public.
