Steve Heading and Jane Chadwick were the runaway winners in the 12 hour solo men’s and women’s categories in the Whyte Night Enduro at BikeRadar Live.

“I’m very happy,” said Heading, who wasn’t sure about his chances coming into the race. “There were one or two of us that I knew were quick.

Heading managed an impressive 32 laps for the 12 hours: “I went out not too hard then just knocked out the laps for eight hours and popped into the tent to look at the results to see how I was getting on. I was in the lead, so I did a couple more hours slightly steadier, had another look, and I was well in the lead so the last two hours I could relax a bit.”

Heading said he does “three or four” enduros a year. “I’ve just done the South Downs double so I’m a little bit tired after that.”

He, like many of the riders, was happy with the 5km loop, which is shorter than most enduro circuits: “It was good yeah. It was a nice course for when you’re tired because there were no big climbs. Every climb was rideable, you didn’t have to get off or suffer for any of them.

“It wasn’t particularly technical. I was on a full suspension Whyte Bike and that made things much easier. It was quite bumpy in places so 12 hours on a hardtail would have been quite hard. There are going to be a few sore people around.”

Women’s 12 hour solo winner Jane Chadwick (21 laps) was buzzing when we spoke to her afterwards: “Oh yeah I’m very happy, absolutely thrilled!”

Night falls but the start/finish tent is a hive of activity

She did have the advantage of being the only competitor, but she still had to finish: “This is the first time I’ve done a solo 12 hour enduro. I’ve done a lot of long distance riding, mountain bike marathons and team enduros but never a solo. I’m embarking on a 24 hour next so this was a taster for me.”

She loved the course too: “It was absolutely brilliant. At first I was a bit unsure about it being such a short lap because it might get a bit tedious but there was enough out there to keep you thinking all the time really.

Jane Chadwick finds one section hard going

Chadwick also had a look around the rest of BikeRadar Live on Saturday: “We intended to have a quiet day yesterday to prepare ourselves for racing last night but we just got carried away with it all. All our heroes. Before we knew it was five o’clock and I hadn’t had a siesta or anything. It was brilliant, absolutely brilliant!”

Solo singlespeed (joint) winner Matt Carr in action

The male pair category was won by the Legends team with a fantastic 37 laps completed. The mixed pair category went to Team What Mountain Bike/Podium Kiss with 34 laps, while the men’s singlespeed was shared by Mike Wilkins and Matt Carr, who both clocked 21 laps and had the same elapsed time. Best male team of four was 11 hours too long with 33 laps, while WROZ won the mixed team with 35 laps.

In the four hour comp category, Matthew Page took out the men’s solo prize with 12 laps while the only women’s solo entrant Melissa Thirkell failed to finish after four laps. Andy Faulknall was sole entrant in the men’s four hour singlespeed, and he did managed 10 laps to win a prize. The best male pair were The Other Coalville Wheelers with 12 laps, while The Anglo Saxons won the male team with 9 laps.

Jerone Walters (Sigma Sport) and Emma Davies (HotChillee) were the winners of £800 cheques and weekend’s accommodation at Stephen Roche’s hotel in the Devil Takes the Hindmost circuit race, the last main event at BikeRadar Live.

The race was run in a unique format: riders were grouped in three bunches according to their category, with the slowest starting first. It didn’t take long for the elite group to catch everyone, however. Lapped riders were taken out by the HotChillee Devils at the start/finish, and after 1hr15min, the last group or the last rider each lap was also eliminated by the Devils. Both men’s and women’s races were run in around 2hrs15min.

Men’s winner Jerone Walters was fortunate in that he had a strong teammate in Wouter Sybrandy to work with. The pair attacked before the first hour was up and opened up an unassailable lead over the peloton, which included Tour de France winner Stephen Roche. Walters was too good for Sybrandy on the uphill finish, and took the line honours with a strong sprint.

Behind them, bunch slowly disintegrated in the wind and on the hills, and eventually a group of three formed with pro triathlete Luke Dragstra (Planet X), Paul Robertson (Sportstest.co.uk) and Shane Pope (Swindon RC). They were chased by Tim Lawson (Science in Sport), but he was unsuccessful in bridging up. Dragstra showed his strength in the final laps to take third place ahead of a gutsy Robertson, with Pope and Lawson rounding out the top six.

After the finish, an exhausted but happy Jerone Walters explained his tactics: “We were just trying to work together and see how it panned out. As it turned out people started attacking so I attacked and then Wouter [Sybrandy] came across in the end. It was really nice sitting on him in the headwind up the hill!”

“It’s quite a hard man’s circuit actually. It really spreads people out.”

Wouter Sybrandy chimed in: “Literally it gets harder every lap. I was in the little ring in the end.”

Walters added, “It was nice to ride around the circuit. I’ve ridden it on a motorbike a few times on track days but it’s a bit different on a push bike.”

Luke Dragstra used the The Devil as part of his Iron Man and triathlon training. He said: “It was a real challenge out on the circuit and I had to work really hard. I really enjoyed the race because it tested my technical skills and was a really tough work out.”

Luke Dragstra finished third

Women: Emma Davies powers to victory

The women’s race was a similar affair. Emma Davies and Alice Monger-Godfrey rode strongly and remained in the same group for the duration, with Davies getting the better of Monger-Godfrey at the finish.

Davies, who has ridden professionally, was the superior rider today. But like many, she didn’t find it easy: “It was tough but it was nice to have Alice and Chris [Ball] as well with me for a while. But yeah it was really windy. I wouldn’t like to be out there on your own.

“We were in groups and then our group worked quite well together actually. Then it broke up a little bit naturally with the wind and everything.”

Monger-Godfrey, who’s based in Belgium, said: “It was a very difficult circuit and tough going because of the strong winds. I loved the atmosphere of the race and it was good to be in a race with the men.”

1987 Tour de France winner Stephen Roche also raced as part of the HotChillee team. He looked comfortable in the main pack but lacked the firepower h the leaders.

Afterwards, he explained his training program: “I only started back on the bike more or less about three weeks ago to prepare for this anto go witd the London Paris. I was told it was flat and no corners. They didn’t tell me there were hills and they told me there was no wind on it so it was quite hard.”

But Roche is no stranger to suffering, and he rated the event very highly: “It was brilliant yes. A great day out. There was a really good atmosphere in the bunch.”

He had similar praise for BikeRadar Live: “Everything that’s going on behind it is absolutely incredible and great for cycling. Fair play to you, seeing the riders putting it on.”

Former England and Crystal Palace footballer, Geoff Thomas, who’s twice ridden the Tour de France route, struggled in the tough conditions having ridden the 100 mile sportive on Saturday. He said: “My legs were suffering a bit so unfortunately I couldn’t beat The Devil. It was a brilliant idea to race on the circuit and Team GTF will definitely be back next year.”

The winning riders shared a prize pot of £2,000, with the 1st place riders also winning a weekend’s accommodation for two at Stephen Roche’s Marina Hotel on Villeneuve-Loubet Beach in Nice.

Perfect weather, stunning scenery and challenging courses were the hallmarks of the first Cycling Plus Sportive supported by Pacific Outdoor Equipment in association with the Geoff Thomas Foundation at BikeRadar Live.

The event was enjoyed by some 500 cyclists, who tackled 69 mile (more than the advertised 100km) and 100 mile routes through Derbyshire and the Peak District. Those who had the fitness for the longer route were rewarded with the toughest climbs, but also the most beautiful views and some incredible riding terrain.

Car traffic was minimal, especially in the Peak District, where you were more likely to see walkers than motorists. The routes were also clearly marked and marshalled in many places and the feed stations were well manned.

Many found the hardest part to be the flattish last 30 miles to the finish, which was into the teeth of a Nor’ easterly wind. But that was all part of the challenge.

Formula 1 star Mark Webber completed the 69 mile route in a very quick time of just over three and a half hours, showing that he’s not just a fast man behind the wheel.

Graeme Obree also managed the 69 mile route (on a borrowed carbon bike, not his home built time trial machine), but didn’t have the easiest time of it: “I was quite tired at the end, but I didn’t have enough water. I drink so much. I had a bottle then it was gone in 10 minutes.”

But Obree wasn’t completely done: he got onto the Donington circuit and did an unofficial lap in a time of under 5′50, on his purpose built time trial bike. He’ll be back on Sunday to do a proper one.

Karen ‘Popette’ Poppelwell, Team Cycling Plus looked a little bit cooked after her crack at the 100 miles, which she managed in an excellent time of 6hrs40min. She was both tired and exhausted when we chatted to her after the finish:

“It was fantastic, great, picturesque, but the last 10 miles I really struggled. Dan from Team Cycling Plus dragged me home. I feel terrible now, not far off cabbage actually.

“I had set targets with my coach Joe Beer: eight hours would have been ‘acceptable’, seven and a half was ’successful’ and under seven was brilliant. So 6hrs40 was just unbelievable! The best bit was when I got to 50 miles in 2hrs55. I’d gotten into some really good groups and that helped keep my speed up.”

Karen was impressed with the middle section of the ride through the Peak District: “It was gorgeous. I’m going to come back with my family.”

Results are listed below in last name alphabetical order. Note: some of the 100 mile times may actually be 100km times, because some who registered for the 100 mile changed their minds mid way and did the shorter route. If you’re one of these, then let us know at bikeradar@bikeradar.com.
