British Council Nigeria
WaPI (Words and Pictures), a British Council forum that is a platform for visual and verbal artistes in the underground to showcase their art (in words and/or pictures).
We take the underground to mean the upcoming, the undiscovered, those who by design or default are not part of the mainstream.
We believe that the under...ground in Nigeria is a hotbed of activity and creativity and we aim to bring some of it to the fore through a regular WaPI programme.
WAPI is also a platform for young artists to use Words and Pictures to talk about and raise attention to issues of concern to them – social, political, economic – issues around social exclusion and freedom of information. Each WAPI event is themed, with all the art focusing around this theme.
Anyone who can showcase an item or performance that is relevant to the theme of the month is welcome to perform or exhibit at WaPI. A sampling of artistes includes: Poets, Fashion Designers, Emcees, Dancers, Graffiti Writers, Animators, Cartoonists / Comic Book Artist, Installation Artists, Painters, Singers, Acrobats, etc.
Entry to all WaPI events both for participants and the audience is free.
WAPI has held in Lagos monthly since July 2007.
WAPI holds in January as follows:
Date: 19th January, 2008
Time: 10am - 4pm
Venue: British Council, 20 Thompson Avenue, Ikoyi, Lagos
Theme: Bring the Noise
Bring the noise is an opportunity to meet, share with , create with and perform alongside musicians and visual artists from across East and West Africa and the UK. Bring the Noise provides an opportunity for personal development helping artists to develop their live performances into an audio visual experience and providing access and advice from key industry professionals.
In September/October 2007, the British Council brought together musicians and visual artists from Senegal. Sierra Leone, Cameroon, Nigeria, Sudan, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda and the UK.
This collective of musicians and artists gathered together in the UK to take part in a 2 week residency.
