CMASH
The Cecilia Quartet have been frequent performers with us since 2006, not long after they formed into what has become one of Canada’s truly outstanding ensembles. Since then they have gone on to win second prize at the immensely prestigious Osaka Chamber Music Competition, having previously won the 2007 Galaxie Rising ...Stars Award in Canada. Their recent performances (May: Guelph MusicFest and our own QuartetFest) were greeted with thunderous enthusiasm by appreciative audiences. And mainly, they are simply a wonderfully interesting, exhilarating, great-sounding, and very engaging ensemble!
*Note: Originally this concert was listed on Sept. 23. However, Min-Jeong Koh is up for a Canada Council instrument and must be in Toronto on the 23rd. This was the best alternative date. Apologies...
Program:
Haydn, op. 74, no. 3 in g, “The Rider”
Liam Wade, Quartet No. 2
Beethoven, Qt. No. 10 in Eb, op. 74, “Harp”
This is one of Haydn’s greatest quartets, with its exciting outer movements (either of which could earn it its familiar nickname), and one of the most powerful slow movements in all of classical music.
Liam Wade’s quartet no. 2 made a huge hit with the audience at the Guelph MusicFest last May, and we asked them to include this exhilarating work in their program for us this fall. Beethoven’s “Harp” is one of his most beautiful creations, with its striking plucked figures in the first movement (where its name comes from), a deeply introspective slow movement, an extraordinary frenetic scherzo, and a finale that is a set of six astonishing variations ranging from despondent to exuberant. In short, a program to bring out the celebrated powers of this great young Canadian foursome.
$25 (sr $20; st $15)

CMASH is thrilled to announce the second annual presentation of our
New American Chamber Music program. This annual event is an opportunity for CMASH composers to premiere brand new works alongside the music of more established composers. Each concert features a specific performing ensemble, enabling CMASH performers to... work closely with CMASH composers to create each new piece. This year we are excited to highlight new and recently written works for voice and piano.
