CPH:DOX - INTERNATIONAL
An entirely new and exceptional collaboration between CPH:DOX and Statens Museum for Kunst – the Danish national gallery – will kick off with a unique concert performance by the American experimental film legend Kenneth Anger. The agency artFREQ has helped organise the event, which will take place at Statens Museum for... Kunst and which will offer the rare experience of a live concert with Anger, 16mm screenings of both older and brand new films, artist talks and a debate with the audience.
This is the first and only time that Denmark is graced by the presence of the 82-year-old multi-artist and filmmaker, who has predicted that he’ll die before the year is up.
”Kenneth Anger is a unique filmmaker, an artist of exceptional imagination.” – Martin Scorsese
The pitch-black subconscious of Hollywood
Occultist, scandal-ridden provocateur and pioneer of modern film language: the avant-garde filmmaker Kenneth Anger has been one of the most influential explorers of the pitch-black subconscious of Hollywood.
Kenneth Anger’s work is both groundbreaking and varied. He set the tone with his debut film Fireworks (1947), a psychedelic account of violence and homosexuality among Navy soldiers. Since then, he has constantly refined his original cinematic style, becoming a great source of inspiration for directors such as Rainer Werner Fassbinder, David Lynch and Martin Scorsese. In addition, Anger has written the books Hollywood Babylon (1959) and Hollywood Babylon II (1984), which reveal Hollywood’s decadent and rotten-to-the-core reality, far from the glamour commonly associated with it. Over the years, he has also had an almost magical influence on artistic personalities such as Mick Jagger, Marianne Faithfull, Jimmy Page, Anaïs Nin as well as numerous painters.
Kenneth Anger’s fascination of all things occult brought him in close contact with the obscure magic of the legendary occultist Aleister Crowley. In this context, Anger developed his view of the filmmaker as a magician and illusionist, who can create collective dreams that are comparable to the religious icons and archetypes of the past. Indeed, Anger’s films and performances are reminiscent of a mad sorcerer casting a spell on living organisms and evoking dark forces from dead matter.
Kenneth Anger´s Technicolor Skull
Under the heading ‘Kenneth Anger’s Technicolor Skull’, Anger will stage a musical art performance at Statens Museum for Kunst. The result will be an overwhelming, almost magical concert ritual filled with music, light and moving pictures. The ensemble will consist of Anger himself playing the electronic Theremin and Brian Butler on the guitar, various electronic instruments and laptop computer. Anger will also show a selection of his films, which have assumed the status of classics over the years, as well as his latest film Ich Will!, which will be screened for only the second time ever. In addition, the night is filled with a number of artist talks, where different protagonists within the film and art worlds get to talk to Anger, and the audience subsequently has the possibility to ask Anger questions and get records, books and films signed by him.
Time and Place
The event will take place at Scenen in Statens Museum for Kunst on 14 November from 2000 to 2400 hrs. Tickets can be purchased her: http://www.cphdox.dk/d1/acc.lasso?arr=13 9
CPH:DOX and Statens Museum for Kunst
The agency artFREQ is responsible for coordinating the event with Kenneth Anger, which is the first among numerous events organised by CPH:DOX and Statens Museum for Kunst during the two weeks of the festival. The collaboration between CPH:DOX and Statens Museum for Kunst arose from a shared desire to take a closer look at the junctions between film and fine art. The resulting events will comprise film screenings, concerts, artist talks and lectures at Statens Museum for Kunst between 7 and 21 November. The works of some of the participating artists are shown at the current “Reality Check” exhibition at Statens Museum for Kunst.
