Canadian Media Watch - Setting the Record Straight
The Canadian Press Date: Sunday Nov. 29, 2009 6:01 PM ET PORT-OF-SPAIN — Prime Minister Stephen Harper assured Canada's military Sunday that he and most Canadians stand behind them, even if his political opposition does not. ...
Canadian Media Watch - Setting the Record Straight

Canadian Media Watch - Setting the Record Straight The headline is misleading. For one, he did not call "jobless people" no-good bastards. He was referring to a particular demographic that contiously goes on welfare, refusing to stick to one job and simply looking for excuses. I'm sure everybody has met that one person who always complains about their jobs and quits th...em often, without commiting to any career. Was the language harsh? Perhaps, but this MP is known for his no-nonsense attitude, and the article refuses to put his quote into the correct context.

Canadian Media Watch - Setting the Record Straight

Canadian Media Watch - Setting the Record Straight The headline itself is biased, implying Harper is a hypocrite for supporting press freedom and not taking questions. The media fails to take into account that A) Harper made it clear from the start he won't be taking questions. Why isn't he taking questions? Well that leads to B) He has another event after wards. A Pri...me Minister that is dedicated to his job is quite more important to me than a Prime Minister concerned with all show.

Canadian Media Watch - Setting the Record Straight

Canadian Media Watch - Setting the Record Straight One only has to read the first few sentences to depict the author's obvious bias. Calling factual Conservative flyers as "ultra-partisan" is childish, especially since the Conservatives weren't accusing anyone of anything, simply providing the Liberal Party's recorded quotes and actions in regards to Israel. Then sayin...g "at the tax payers expense" is another misleading fact, as ALL parties send out these forms of flyers at the tax payers expense, and this is no special circumstance. Let us not forget Liberals would send out flyers that told voters the Conservatives were racists and sexists. And unlike Liberal flyers which claim that Canadians are now ashamed of their flag, Conservatives use cold facts!

Canadian Media Watch - Setting the Record Straight

Canadian Media Watch - Setting the Record Straight Once again, we have the Canadian Press releasing Liberal Party talking points as pure news. The CP published a story over Liberal outrage about some Conservative advertising. The story has quotes from Liberals, but not a single Conservatives. It does not defend the opposing view and does not even offer contrasting evid...ence from the Liberal claim. Finally, the story DOES NOT EVEN QUOTE THE PAMPHLETS the Conservatives used that are supposedly defamatory. The CP should either start publishing real news or openly acknowledge that they are the media arm of the Liberal Party.

Canadian Media Watch - Setting the Record Straight Why does CTV have an American political story filed under the "Political Headlines" section rather than the "World Headlines" section? The title "Conservatives blast Obama" could easily be interpreted to mean "Canadian Conservatives." CTV usually has the good sense to specify "US Conservatives" in similiar stories. Thi...s may just be a slip up, but CTV should have enough sense to provide clear headlines for readers.

Canadian Media Watch - Setting the Record Straight

Canadian Media Watch - Setting the Record Straight Unbelievable. In the same day the National Post airs the actual story that Liberal Party fundraising dropped an incredible 50% from last quarter, the Canadian Press decides to run with the story that the Liberals are actually catching up in fundraising, using the ludicrous standard of the lowest of low points in Libera...l donation history, 2008. They also describe the Liberals' $7.6 million raised as "not far behind" the Conservatives, who have so far raised $12.8 million this year. "Not far behind"?! The Conservatives have raised almost double!

Canadian Media Watch - Setting the Record Straight

Canadian Media Watch - Setting the Record Straight This is by far, the most laughible piece of "news" posted yet. The article's headline is a joke, and begins with "Say it aint so, prime minister" as if Harper just admitted to having a plot to begin deployment of his clone army. For a media obsessed with finding every little fault with this nation's leader, they blame ...him for not wanting to watch their ridicule attempts day in and day out.

Canadian Media Watch - Setting the Record Straight

Canadian Media Watch - Setting the Record Straight The article begins "For a government obsessed with photo-ops and media control." It only goes downhill from there. Who is City to decide what constitutes obsessive media control and what does not? City is perhaps the most biased television network in Canada.

Canadian Media Watch - Setting the Record Straight

Canadian Media Watch - Setting the Record Straight The term "scoff" entails a sense of arrogance, mean-spirited, mockery sense of attitude. This isn't the case, the Conservatives are simply proving the accusations wrong. The article couldn't just say that?

Canadian Media Watch - Setting the Record Straight

Canadian Media Watch - Setting the Record Straight A Harris-Decima poll shows the Conservatives 7 points ahead of the Liberals. On the same day, an Ekos poll shows the Conservatives entering a majority territory. Which story is more compelling, one that lines up with trends of at least 5 other polls and predicts the first majority government in six years, or one that s...ays nothing will change? This is yet another example of the Canadian Press selectively choosing which story to air. Well done to the Globe and Mail and the National Post for selecting the most naturally compelling news story.

Canadian Media Watch - Setting the Record Straight

Canadian Media Watch - Setting the Record Straight The Canadian Press is at it again. They try to portray the Conservatives as hypocrites for "reject[ing] a bid Thursday to expedite a key piece of their tough-on-crime agenda, even as they continued to bash Liberal senators for holding up the legislation."

This is based on the Conservatives' objections that the Liberals ...conditions for fast-tracking are amendments to the bill. The article takes the side of the Liberals, and consistently gives them the final rebuttal to government arguments. Bias is not just about the language; it is the choice of story aired, the title, and the perspective the writers take.
