Recent times have seen many dramatic business news headlines but the business of business news itself is experiencing unsettling times with markets fracturing, formats faltering and once ‘free’ news content moving behind pay walls.
The rise of new TV channels and programmes may have won new audiences for the business o...f business, but they have also fractured existing audiences. The web and social media have further undermined traditional print media models for business news and have diluted their advertising revenue.
The negative results of these pressures are plain to see. Some business news providers are moving previously free web based content behind subscription barriers and The Birmingham Post, one of only a small number of regional morning newspapers targeting the business community, has announced that it may have to move from being daily to weekly. At a time when many businesses are desperately rebuilding trust with their customers can we afford to lose such longstanding titles and established sources of news?
The University of Warwick is bringing four leading media figures together in a special event to share their hopes and fears for the future of business media. CBI Head and former Financial Times Editor Richard Lambert; BBC Media Correspondent Torin Douglas (Chair); Marc Reeves, the Editor of the Birmingham Post and David Arnott, Associate Professor of Marketing and e-business at Warwick Business School will discuss these issues with an audience of opinion formers and business leaders from across the Midlands.
Registration will open at 8.30 am where refreshments and breakfast will be available. Admission to the event is free but you must book in advance at www.warwick.ac.uk/go/businessnewsevent. Places are limited and will be available on a first come first served basis, the closing date for bookings is Monday 5th October.Read more
