No Blasphemy Law in Ireland

No Blasphemy Law in Ireland This may not be for everyone, but it is an excellent website that provides the necessary documentation and information required for changing your official religious status. Unfortunately, freedom of choice is a rare commodity in Ireland and it is difficult to officially to register your religious position. Maybe if more people could register their position dranconican bills like this wouldn't be proposed.

Dermot Ahern has managed to make me feel ashamed and embarrassed to be Irish. I think he should resign and crawl under a rock.

So. If brought to court for libel or slander the injured party must appear. I presume that in any blasphemy case Jesus or his auld fella will be making an appearance and what with being omnipresent they can appear at severalo cases at once. Cool!!!!!

At least the House of Lords ruled that the law was practically useless in the case taken against the people behind Jerry Springer the Musical by Christian Voice. The need to repeal the law and the actual desire to do so exists in Britain unlike the Dáil, that would be my main point of comparison between the two.

Our Government has no desire to scrap this law. It has turned England into a police state and is interested only in creating ever more draconian laws, not repealing any of those already on the statute book. Over a year ago, at a No 10 press briefing, Brown's spokesman said the Government "fully understood the case set out by those who wished to ... Read moreabolish the offence of blasphemy" but it was necessary to consult churches, particularly the Church of England, before coming to a final decision and that was what the Government was now doing. Subject to that, the Government would consider to move amendments in the House of Lords. Brown has ruled out lifting the whip and allowing Labour MPs a free vote if the subject ever made it into the Commons. Since that statement, in Jan 08, bugger all has happened. Don't hold your breath.

No Blasphemy Law in Ireland Dermot Ahern, writing in The Times today, claims that his proposal is intended to prevent a constitutional dilemma due to the presence of an anti-blasphemy section of the Constitution making it an imperative to have one in law, rather than an Amendment. H

I have to agree with Trevor, and jjust about everyone else here on this one. Bottom line: seperate Church and State, This issue, like others in Irish law and politics, should have been addressed and resolved years ago. Ireland has been ready for this type of change for a long time.Changing laws can be tricky and drawn out; look at the X Case in ... Read more1992, and the Supreme Court changing the law in 1995. What do people have to go through here before we have the right to chose for oursellves.

Dermot needs top get a feckin' grip!!
