Linsey Does the Bowery have a book group?

The Bowery Ellie Greenwich is on my mind

The Bowery
Bored of the streets being packed with tourists?
Fed up with the August rain?
Feeling the nights beginning to draw in?
CAST AWAY YOUR TEARS
HAVE NO FEAR
THE BOWERY IS HERE!
After being closed for the festival we will be back, with more glitter and glam than ever before!
Come to the re-opening night with wonderful entertainmen...t from New York Anti Folker Dan Costello and support from Edinburgh's Wounded Knee.
Hurrah Hurrah!
"Few singer-songwriters have a stage presence as welcoming and engaging as Dan Costello. He comes to entertain, and he succeeds. Costello writes and performs vividly-worded folk songs in the anti-folk tradition: smart, funny, quirky, powerhouse songwriting, distinctly New York. Armed with a booming, clear voice and a six-string, Costello sings his thoughtful, intelligent lyrics from the heart. His performance was full of energy and imagery, and even a bit of the theatrical – Very cool!" - Jezebel Music

Supported by Edinburgh artist, Wounded Knee, with his contemporary folktronica

Foxgang are four lads in Scotland (From/od Newcastle, Poland and the States)who drink, dance and make sweet music together. they hate the sound of the alarm clock. they love people who know how to laugh, and the barmaids in awaria. they argue as often as we agree.
I'll be honest, I didn't get Foxgang first time I heard ...them (on CD, not live, otherwise i'd most definitely have got it!) There was a cynicism and melancholia in their music that wouldn't normally appeal to me, but what I was missing was the intellect and the over-riding optimism, just listen to Nichola to get an idea of the Foxgang experience. Throw in insanely talented musicians from around the world, a wealth of influences, and the most compelling frontman i've seen in any local band, and you're onto a winner. If it's light indie fluff you're after, steer clear, but if you want a band with intelligence, energy and balls, get Foxgang to your party!.....................FlatBeat mg...
Their stuff sounds quite mod-like at times, and has a good, funky beat underlying much of it and of course, most importantly, some bloody good tunes. Fox Gang - White English. ……………….Song by Toad

Edinburgh based seven piece Jesus H. Foxx return to The Bowery from their first national tour and release of their new EP “matter”, to back up recent comparisons to the likes of Architecture in Helsinki and Broken Social Scene.
Support comes from Dundee’s One Inch Volcano – “sludgepop breeds Thurston Moore shaking skele...tons is a dirty Scottish cupboard” – or so says Drowned in Sound, Katy Bar the Door (a well known warning phrase in the south of the USA, and a thundering Dundee post-rock outfit) and Edinburgh newcomers 19 Folds, a kind of Joy Division/R.E.M./ Mogwai/ Dinosaur Jr Stew

VIKING MOSES
(http://www.myspace.com/vikingmoses)
The VIKING MOSES was initiated by Southern Missourian Brendon Massei in 2003. The band has a dynamic, rotating cast of both established and obscure musicians worldwide, and is currently based in Northern Appalachia (USA).
More strait forward rock/soul than weird/folk as mo...st of their contemporaries seem to be marketed, Viking Moses’ recordings are very accessible in convention, though live shows normally tend to have an unconventional approach, being hosted in unorthodox venues, often having assembled bands night-of, using members of support bands or strangers in the audience. Both aspects are delivered with utmost soul, passion, and humility, and always offer fans and strangers an experience which is unique and often contrary to expectation.
Viking Moses has been finding very fair attention since 2004, thanks to Devendra Banhart's "Golden Apples..." compilation and good words, followed by a signing by Alan McGee (Creation Records founder, and manager of Oasis, Jesus & Mary Chain, Primal Scream, Teenage Fanclub, Mogwai, Libertines, etc.) which has found Viking Moses high acclaim in UK and Europe, and kept them heavily active in that part of the world these past few years. ---

Diane Cluck is one of the most talented singer/songwriters today. Devendra Banhart, who has included Diane Cluck’s music on at least one compilation, is an enthusiastic listener: ““My favorite singer/songwriter in all of New York City. I’m so happy to be alive at the same time she is because I get to see her perform. I...t’s her and guitar, or her and piano, or her and harmonium. Her lyrics are so good; when I play this for people they stop doing everything and are quiet for hours after.”
Among others she has collaborated with Jeffrey Lewis and Herman Düne.
Mary Hampton :'If Joanna Newsom's spiders-in-the-hair folk floats your tankard, then Brighton's Mary Hampton is the new brew. Spectral and spartan she mixes poety and classical influences into plinking, piano-led folk ballads...giving her debut an exotic, gothic drama'- Q

The Bowery
Don't mistake Cheveu for a one-trick pony. The French band's debut veers between delectably trashy drum-machine punk to Casio experiments that reverberate in slow, strange ways, hinting at graphic drug use and casual violence. The singer's voice is just slightly detached from the rest of the music, hovering somewhere a...bove the band and adding to the album's woozy, unusual feel, whether barking, berating, or pleading. The songs are claustrophobic and desperate, or they're silly and indulgent. But they're nearly always concise, catchy, weird, and aloof. - Pitchfork
This record is rude, rancorous; it’s balls-out like it’s got a mad point to push, but mad because that point is everything or actually it’s just about screwing and dunderheadedness and how to make that same-old song interesting again. It tricks through a larger stylistic mess—mod, jangle, mash—than any three-piece should have hand rights on. Dead-simple and pattern-sweet, Cheveu is an expression of wild, tuft out insensibility. It makes me want to be a better person. - Cokemachineglow
