GetUp! **Campaign Update** Send them to Copenhagen

The good news is we've raised enough money so far to send two Pacific Islanders to next week's climate negotiations in Copenhagen. Unfortunately we're way short of our target of sending five impressive Pacific delegates from a range of countries hardest hit by climate change.

U...nfortunately, the nations most affected by climate change can't afford to send large delegations to argue for their country's very survival - especially given the costs in getting from the Pacific to Copenhagen. But together, we can work together to send compelling people who otherwise wouldn't get a say.

www.getup.org.au
We've found passionate, articulate and knowledgeable Pacific Islanders to share their personal stories about the impacts of climate change, but neither they (nor their governments) can afford to send them to the negotiations.

GetUp! **Campaign Alert** Help us send a delegation of young Pacific Islanders to Copenhagen. These people are facing the threat of losing their entire home nations. It's a message all world leaders need to hear at Copenhagen - where a global deal is needed for the Pacific Islands' very survival.

People-power can get these voi...ces to Copenhagen; their stories can convince the world to act. Can you chip in $50 or $100 to make it happen?

GetUp members have a proud history of getting marginalised voices heard on issues that affect them. Now our help is needed to get voices heard on an issue that affects us all.

You should be sending Torres Strait Islanders. Our own indigenous Australians are threatened with the loss of their homes.

GetUp! **Video Report-Back** We've put together a video to say thanks!

GetUp had a massive day of climate change action on Monday, with an ad in The Australian, a press conference with the Kevin Rudd we'd like to hear and a delegation of amazing GetUp volunteers meeting with Senators and MPs in Parliament House.

With the real ...world leaders shrinking from their responsibilities in the lead-up to Copenhagen, we need to do all we can to remind them why they are there - to lead us into a safe climate future. Perhaps we should send our impersonator to Copenhagen instead of the real PM?!

www.getup.org.au
On November 16, 2009, GetUp members took the campaign for climate action from their communities to Parliament House. With our climate partners the ACFand ACTU, our team held over 50 meetings with Senators, MPs and advisors in one day.

GetUp! **Campaign Alert** We're stepping up our fight against the polluter lobby! As MPs make their way back to Parliament next week, we'll be confronting them with a huge newspaper ad countering the polluter lobby's fear-mongering and showing that cutting emissions creates jobs. Check out our ad and chip in to help us get it into The Australian next Monday!

GetUp! **Myth-busting Action** It's time to tell the truth on asylum seekers.
We've prepared a myth-busting factsheet to help make you a champion of tolerance and truth for asylum seekers. Download it or take it to your cup day lunch, and start a conversation.
Your voice has the power to change the minds of politicians who thin...k they have to take a tough stance on asylum seekers, and the media who think irresponsible and sensationalist coverage is what the Australian people expect.

www.getup.org.au
The most damaging myth in this debate is that held by our leaders - that Australians are intolerant towards asylum seekers. Be a part of changing the conversation about asylum seekers in your community.

GetUp! **Campaign Alert** The coal lobby has brought out the big guns, by blanketing the airwaves in coal country marginal seats with a new ad campaign, in
an attempt to undermine our transition to a clean-energy economy and
strong-arm politicians into giving them extra handouts.
The same man behind the 'Kevin07' brand is runni...ng their campaign, but we won't let this slick PR effort go unanswered. Chip in to get our parody ad on the air and cut through their lies with a voice for Australians who want to cut emissions and create jobs!

GetUp! The Government has just announced the results of its National Human Rights Consultation: Australians demand we join the rest of the democratic world and protect our rights through a Human Rights Act. Over 35,000 Australians told the Consultation their views - the vast majority asking for a Human Rights Act. Now it's ti...me for the rest of us to encourage the Government to adopt the community's recommendations. Sign our petition here: www.getup.org.au/campaign/EnactOurAct http://bit.ly/11LmAn

According to Richard Ackland in today's Sydney Morning Herald "The 'hard issues'' such as same-sex marriage and abortion are neatly excised from the suggested model for a human rights bill."

Kevin Rudd & Senator Conroy, I don't want draconian government restrictions on the internet that will hold back the digital economy and miss the vast majority of unwanted content.

Andrew: Sure, but that article simplifies the whole shebang to a porn or no porn issue. Which it simply isn't. To be sure I'd support public discussion on how to subject porn to the same controls as print media experience but that means ultimately I'd see a whole pile of technologists commenting positively on it as technically feasible and sensible. Instead I hear them all up i arms about performance hits, false positives and more ...

GetUp! Senator Fielding also decided at the last minute to support the
bill. So often we criticise politicians for not standing up and
speaking out. Now it is our responsibility to thank them for doing the
right thing. You can send a message of thanks to these Senators on
GetUp's campaign page.

GetUp! **Campaign Update** Detention Debt Abolished! Thanks to the efforts of GetUp members, along with refugee and asylum seeker campaigners across the nation, the bill to abolish detention debt passed just minutes ago in the Senate. In an historic move, Liberal Senator Troeth, who met with a GetUp delegation of those affect...ed by this policy, abandoned her party's position and crossed the floor to support the bill.

GetUp! "Next week we are meeting with the Government to look at ways in which we can work together in partnership for our future in our Homelands. But we can only solve this together. When we walk into meetings at Parliament House, it would make us so confident to have thousands of Australians there in spirit - then I'm sure they would hear us."

GetUp! "We all have equal rights to be clothed, to be sustained, to have shelter, and this also includes our homelands, big and small. These are places of significance to us, that have our songlines, where our names come from, where our dance comes from, where our art comes from, and where our law and culture comes from - it makes us who we are."

GetUp! **Campaign Alert** Save the Homelands!
Homelands are small remote communities where Indigenous Australians are living on land that has nourished their mothers and fathers for thousands of generations. They are demonstrated success stories. Homelands mean better health and longer life expectancies. We'd like to share a m...essage to you from an Indigenous homelands resident, Barayuwa Mununggurr:
