The Flying Monk - Not so long ago I had the pleasure of reviewing Soop's first show, The Overcoat, so I was curious to see if they could maintain that level of inventiveness and creativity with second outing The Flying Monk.

SOOP Less than a week to go. A brand new show is such an unknown quantity (obviously!). Will it work? Will we have an audience? Will they like it?

As Malmesbury Abbey prepares anxiously for a royal visit, Brother Eilmer keeps nipping up the bell-tower with a book about Daedalus and some food for the jackdaws. Meanwhile, bored with plundering the same old towns along the Bristol Channel, the Vikings have decided to take a trip further inland. As the villagers meet... the pillagers, the followers of Odin find the church-bell appealing, and Ethelred tries not to swap his kingdom for a Norse. But where on earth is Eilmer?Read more

SOOP is delighted to announce the return of its inaugural production, The Overcoat, which enjoyed a triumphant debut at Havant Arts Centre in 2008.
Based on Gogol’s famous comic-mystery, a copying clerk realises his threadbare overcoat is beyond repair; but in the freezing, fog-bound streets of St Petersburg, new clobb...er gets you noticed. Social climbing, low down crooks and endless bureaucracy lead him astray, while fingers from beyond scrabble at his coat-tails.
With the fog so thick…how can you watch your back?
The original performance of The Overcoat was described as “thrilling and new and vibrant... exciting and definitely worth seeing” in The News, and Darryl Wakelin's central performance was nominated for the Best Actor award in The Guide Awards. Read more
