COVENTRY community radio station Hillz FM is returning to the airwaves once more – and this time it’s permanent.

The station, broadcasting on 98.6fm, is run by Hillfields charity Watch (Working Actively to Change Hillfields) and has been granted a five to ten year OFCOM community radio broadcasting licence.

Charley ‘H’ Bembridge, the former drummer for 2-Tone band The Selecter will be officially launching the station on Friday in Hillfields Square, in Victoria Street.

The station has been broadcasting a range of multi-lingual shows aimed at a wide range of the community online on a restricted licence for the last few years but this is the first time it has been granted a permanent licence.

It is based in the Frat House, a young people’s informal learning centre, in Victoria Street, which is run by Watch, and the station is manned by young people.

Gino Shankle, youth development worker and DJ, said the launch of the radio station was a sign of the improvements made in the Hillfields area. “When Hillz 98.6FM goes live, it will cap a remarkable journey for this area and its people,” he said.

“It’s ironic that our launch coincides with another recession.

“Charley and his mates used to sing about the area’s poverty during the last major economic downturn, but now he can beat his drum to the lots of positives all over Hillfields at the moment.”

Charley ‘H’ Bembridge will be joined at the launch in Hillfields Village Square, from 3-6pm, by a number of live performers including 91db, The EQs, SNN, P-Nology, and Leon Rolyat.
