Following the successful buttons exhibition in Newcastle in 2007 and Respectacles exhibition in Liverpool in 2008 Coventry will be creating a dramatic piece of public art through donations of people's shoes.

Linking directly to the ‘Stand up to Hatred’ theme, an appeal is underway for people to donate shoes to produce a... piece of public art that will be displayed in the city centre to mark Holocaust Memorial Day. The inspiration for the work comes from the piles of personal items to be seen at the Auschwitz Memorial Museum, which provide a stark reminder of the sheer scale of death and human suffering during the Holocaust.

To contribute to the piece of art, people are being urged to donate a pair of shoes which, after January, will be donated to charity to help people living in third world countries.

People who have already pledged their support include the Lord Mayor of Coventry. Councillor Andy Matchet, football legend Jimmy Hill, Sky Blues FA Cup winning manager John Sillett and former world record holder and chief executive of UK Athletic Dave Moorcroft.
