Jessica Duchen just attended an interview with Lionel Shriver held at the LSE, with Daniel Johnson, editor of Standpoint. Someone in the audience asked 'What's the most important quality in a great novelist?' Lionel said: 'Compassion.' Suddenly I feel a bit better about life.

Jessica Duchen If you liked SONGS or HUNGARIAN DANCES, why not try ALICIA'S GIFT? Just because it has a pink piano on the front, that doesn't make it a lousy book and it has some teeth regarding the music industry & child prodigies. I was really rather pleased with it...

Thanks, Judy! I hope it reaches you OK. I don't yet have a US publisher, unfortunately.

Jessica Duchen V cool - my friend Roxanna Panufnik's choral piece 'Stay With Me' has been shortlisted for the prestigious British Composers Awards; I adapted the words for her from the very beautiful prayer by Padre Pio. It's a gorgeous piece of music and it was extremely exciting to be involved. Winners will be announced on 1 December.

Jessica Duchen Back from France, where I finished the first draft of a new novel, sort of... and am delighted with the beautiful illustrated spread given to my story 'The Last Arabesque' in 'My Weekly' magazine, though of course it's My Last-Weekly now (3 Oct edition)

Jessica - no, I can access the Standpoint site fine - it's just that you seem not to post as often as you used to.
Good luck with the new novel - I thought Hungarian Dances was a knockout.

Jessica Duchen I've just taken delivery of a very chunky pack of entries for the Richmond Young Writers Competition, for which I agreed to be a judge (*halo brightens*). Only 15 in the most senior category, though - is it not "cool" to write when you're a teenager? if so, that's sad. Maybe more are stuck in the post....

Jessica Duchen Very much looking forward to the Manuscripta Book Festival in Amsterdam next Sunday, where Philippe Graffin and I will be talking about joining musical & literary forces (or at least having a lot of fun) with 'Hungarian Dances' - it is out in Dutch translation next week!

Jessica Duchen "Songs of Triumphant Love is an enthralling novel : I couldn't stop reading. I got deeper and deeper into the very real world Jessica Duchen has created and just had to find out how it would unravel. Jessica writes with an unpredictable and original voice and a dazzling perceptiveness, and I was hooked from the first page. A sensational achievement." - JOANNA LUMLEY

Jessica Duchen Thrilled by the latest reader review for SONGS on Amazon!: "This book is a wonderful read. I couldn't it put down. The plotting and characterizations draw one in immediately and one gets truly involved in the lives of the characters right from the start. I really enjoyed reading it."

Jessica Duchen SONGS has made it into 'Woman' Magazine's Sassy Summer Reads page, in rather good company. They call it: "A touching story of family relationships".
