Mixing historical fact, fiction, myth and invention 'Playing a round with Shakespeare' embarks on a comical journey that takes in the history of golf, witchcraft, ancestry and the story of Macbeth - with a drop of whisky thrown in for good measure.
James VI of Scotland is now James I of England. As a true Scot he introd...uces the game of golf - a Scottish invention - to England. William Shakespeare is at the peak of his popularity and a favourite with the king. In order to keep on the right side of his king, Shakespeare reluctantly agrees to accompany James, who has a keen interest in ancestry and witches, on a homecoming golfing trip to Forres.
Shakespeare hates the game and as he struggled through the wind and rain Shakespeare's mind starts to turn to evil thoughts, plotting to kill his king with a blow to the head from a five iron. But, realising which side his bannock is buttered, Shakespeare finds an outlet for his frustration and misery in a new play, set in Scotland in which a lord murders his king in order to claim the throne and fulfill his destiny at the same time. Perhaps with a suitable ending showing James's lineage the play will take the King's mind off golf!Read more

Vancouver's Headwater is one of the busiest acoustic roots bands in North America, and with good reason. Equally at home playing festivals and soft-seaters as busking on the street before a nightclub gig, Headwater quickly captivates with driving rhythms, adventurous steel guitar and mandolin solos, and beautiful three...-part vocal harmonies.
Jonas Shandel (guitar, banjo, vocals) and Matt Bryant (mandolin, vocals) began their creative partnership while still in grade school. The pair have been influenced as much by listening to Peter Gabriel, Neil Young, and John Hiatt records as by one another’s voices, writing, and playing. Now, along with steel guitarist Tim Tweedale and Patrick Metzger on upright bass, Headwater is cutting an original musical and performance path – blending elements of country, bluegrass, old time and rock.Read more

Long Gone Lonesome tells the story of Thomas Fraser. The Shetlander with two lives. By day fisherman, father and islandman, by night world class innovator in American country and roots music.
Thomas was dedicated to his art, mastering the styles of his heroes - like pioneering country singer Jimmie Rodgers, America's Bl...ue Yodeller - and making their songs his own.
Using all his hard earned money from the sea, he bought the first Grundig reel to reel, creating ground-breaking self made multi-tracked recordings, which he gave to close friends as gifts. His modesty stopped them travelling any further.
Thomas died in 1978, at the age of 50, following an accident at sea. His immense shyness meant only a handful of people had ever seen him perform. His tapes were more or less forgotten for a quarter of a century until his grandson realised their importance and started the slow process of restoring them and transferring them to CD. The first modest release ignited a blaze of interest in Thomas and his music.
Three more CDs have followed as well as a festival in his honour, plaudits from critics and scholars around the world, a documentary - and now this musical telling of his story.
‘I've written a script that aims to tell Thomas's story, and to convey the essence of the music he loved and performed with so much passion. Produced by the National Theatre of Scotland and directed by the Company’s own Artistic Director Vicky Featherstone - it's not a play as such. Instead, the show will be a mix of storytelling, music and what you might call dramatic jam sessions with games, improvisations, tall tales, exaggerations, musical explorations and heartfelt personal confessions disguised as jaunty novelty numbers.’ Duncan McLean, July 2009Read more

Bruce Fummey returns to The Warehouse with some fresh faces from his "Just Laugh" team. Bruce has a cheeky and vivacious approach to comedy (and physics, and financial services, and anything else he turns his mind to) which has been appreciated by comedy audiences from Lands End to John O Groats and back again (but not... all on the same night!).
Bruce Morton - Scotland ’s acclaimed comic, storyteller and social commentator was a founder of the Funny Farm Comedy Collective which in 1989 helped kick-start the Scottish stand-up scene.
John Gillick - one of the most experienced and accomplished stand-up comedians in Scotland today. And it shows. A former member of Glasgow-based comedy collective, The Funny Farm, John was there at the start of the renaissance of Scottish comedy and has been beating a path for other comics to follow ever since.Read more
