NEW EXHIBITION: The Independent Type: Books and Writing in Victoria is a free exhibition that celebrates Victoria's rich and diverse written culture, highlighting the stories, the voices and the spirit of independence that have made our literature unique.

The Independent Type Exhibition


With this important exhibition the State Library of Victoria celebrates Melbourne's status as a UNESCO City of Literature. The exhibition traces Victoria's literary evolution from traditional Indigenous storytelling through colonial classics to the vibrant contemporary writing scene. This thread is interwoven with the grand narrative of Victoria's history, and of the people and events that made Melbourne marvellous. Program of events
 

Mirror of the World: Books & Ideas

Permanent exhibition: This exhibition showcases many of the rare, beautiful and historically significant books held in the Library’s collections. Located in the galleries overlooking the magnificent La Trobe Reading Room, this exhibition celebrates the unique place of books in our hearts and minds.

Mirror of the World: Books & Ideas

Mirror of the World: Books & Ideas provides an overview of the history of book production, design and illustration, with a display of fine examples from the Library's collections dating from the Middle Ages to the present day. The title of the exhibition is taken from William Caxton’s Myrrour of the Worlde (1490), one of the first illustrated books published in England. More details

Changing Face of Victoria

Permanent exhibition: This exhibition looks at some of the people, the places and the events that have shaped life in Victoria over the past 200 years. The State Library of Victoria’s unique collections reveal these stories through artefacts, photographs, drawings, maps, letters and diaries. These include treasures such as the Batman Deeds, the last notes of Burke and Wills, and Ned Kelly’s armour, as well as photographs and documents from everyday life.

Major General (Retired) Mike O'Brien and Professor Bruce Scates of Monash University discuss the exhumation, identification and reburial of several hundred Australian soldiers found in Fromelles, France. Andy Muirhead will moderate a panel of four opinionated Melburnians: Jane Clifton, Tony Wilson, Tony Martin and Catherine Deveny. State Library of Victoria 30.8% of survey respondents believe Melbourne is equal parts bookish and bogan. 17.9% believe Melbourne is mostly a city of bogans with a touch of bookishness while only 7.7% believe that Melbourne is clearly a city of books. Interesting results. Thanks to all who participated in our survey.
