No big surprises in the first D.C. Council vote on legalizing same-sex marriage: the Council today voted 11-2 to approve the "Religious Freedom and Civil Marriage Equality Amendment Act of 2009," with Marion Barry (D-Ward 8) and Yvette Alexander (D-Ward 7) the only dissenters.

National Equality March There is no room for racism in a U.S. for all of us. There is no room for racism in an LGBT community for all of us either.

We long for a country that lifts all of us up, dares to care, offers love, generosity, and justice. We reject the racism that keeps us divided. We celebrate our interdependence and our capacity to love our neighbors as ourselves.

Frederick, what I am referring to is a national civil union registry that would be recognized in ALL states and for ALL purposes EXACTLY like marriage....why is this so difficult to understand...it is NOT a compromise. This will not work in individual states...this is where we compromised. My main reason for rethinking the whole issue is that I don... See More't believe that the majority of American Christians will concede on the "marriage" issue, as they think this institution belongs to them...and let's be honest here...right or wrong, there is a dangerous intermingling of religion (Christian) and politics in the US. I say let them have the religious institution they have all but destroyed. What Bible verse will they quote to deny us the benefits of a federally recognized civil union? But civil union legislature must be carefully written and enacted at a federal level to mirror ALL the benefits of marriage.
Separate but equal does not even come into it really....we would have the SAME rights with a federal civil union...so let's please get off of that one and ALL the flawed analogies to the civil rights movement of the 60's.
I did not infer that it is melodramatic to want the same rights and protections and my apologies if I have offended anyone....however, I do find much of the rhetoric to be melodramatic statements that are not backed up with any sort of valid reasoning or argument.
I am not preaching to anyone...I am IMPLORING you....PLEASE look to the example of our LGBT brothers and sisters in the UK.....civil unions WORK there. And yes it took a reworking of the language of many of their laws to include "Civil partners" but IT WORKED. It is arrogant of us to ignore their progress as a compromise.
OR ...let's dig our heels in and stay on the hook with the religious right.....

LOS ANGELES -- With public attention focused largely on battles over whether gay couples should be able to marry, a less-noticed movement to grant health and other benefits to same-sex partners is gaining significant ground across the country in courtrooms, in legislatures and at the ballot box.
