Although ...contemporary critics nicknamed it Brahms’s ‘Pastoral’, its sunny and expansive mood likened to the pastoral mood of Beethoven’s Sixth Symphony, it is in fact closer in spirit to Schubert’s symphonies than Beethoven’s.
