Christoph von Dohnányi is joined by Maria Joao Pires for the final concert of theBrahms composed his Second Symphony in the summer of 1877 during a visit to the Austrian Alps. Although ...contemporary critics nicknamed it Brahms’s ‘Pastoral’, its sunny and expansive mood likened to the pastoral mood of Beethoven’s Sixth Symphony, it is in fact closer in spirit to Schubert’s symphonies than Beethoven’s.
