In the beginning, quite frankly, most people thought Mark Birkbeck had lost his marbles. It was 1992, the middle of the last recession, and surely only a madman would think of building a posh shop bang in the middle of nowhere in the Scottish Highlands, with nothing but deer on the horizon.

The very colorful Atholl Highlanders Annual Parade, with inspection by John Murray, 11th Duke of Atholl, will take place on the parade ground before Blair Castle at 2.30 pm on Saturday, 23rd May 2009. Accompanied by their Pipe Band, the Highlanders will open the proceedings with the traditional firing of their mountain... gun, a ceremony guaranteed to start things with a 'bang'.

Over 3000 cyclists are expected to descend upon Pitlochry when Britain's only closed-road cycle challenge - the Etape Caledonia - returns for a third year on Sunday 17th May 2009.
The Etape Caledonia offers ordinary cyclists the chance to race on closed roads in safety, and provides a stern but achievable challenge thr...ough some breathtaking Scottish scenery.
This year the 81-mile course will start and finish in Pitlochry, winding around Loch Rannoch and Loch Tummel, with a total ascent of 1,949m. Etape Caledonia is open to anyone between the ages of 18 and 80.
