Totally brilliant. Stopping the Royal Trournament was madness. it's one of those occasions when one can feel so very proud of being British.

The Royal Tournament was the greatest thing that as a child I ever saw. Then I joined the Navy in 1980, and in 1992 I took part in my first Royal Tournament as a member of Portsmouth Field Gun Crew (B crew). I then followed this by taking part for Portsmouth Field Gun (A crew) in 93, 97, 99. The feeling of pride and achievement that was gained by all those involved cannot really be put into words. I also remember seeing the training track at Portsmouth 1 year on from 1999 a weed infested boat park which I now believe has been built upon.

Many of the people required to bring this once great tradition back have now left the Navy ( My self included) as after the demise of this excellent competition there was little or no challenge left to keep us in.

To bring this back would now be a very difficult mission to achieve. As the Training tracks have gone, The experience has Gone and with the general public’s dislike for injury (because with the lack of experience there would be many injuries) I am afraid that this is once proud tradition that with the stroke of a pen and an accountants balance book has been lost forever. ... Lets remember the Royal Navy Command Field Gun competition for what it was a Group of like minded highly skilled and fearless servicemen entertaining their country and honouring one of the greatest feats of Courage, Strength and Stamina the relief of the Siege of Lady Smith.

The Honouring of that siege continues today in Brickwood’s Field Gun a cost saving alternative to a lost great tradition.

I was taken to the Royal Tournamentevery year from when I was 6. I loved it. I took my two sons there and we loved it. One son is now in the Royal Navy and we so miss The Royal Tournament. Not only was it clever, exciting and wonderful - It made me proud to be English.
