Rye Wise Man in the frame - on 90p Christmas stamp!
The Pre-Raphaelite influence on stained-glass windows in England’s churches is to be celebrated on this year’s Christmas stamps. Rye’s own St Mary the Virgin church has been chosen to feature on the 90p stamp. The Wise Man is taken from a design by Sir Edward Burne-Jon...es and is among illustrious company in this year’s Christmas collection. Madonna and Child, taken from a window by Henry Holiday in the Church of Ormesby St Michael, Great Yarmouth appears on the 1st-class stamp. The 2nd-class stamp, Angel, comes from a window designed by William Morris in the Church of St James at Staveley, Kendal.
The stamps, designed by Andrew Ross and on sale from today, coincide with a revival of interest in the Pre-Raphaelite movement, brought about partly by series such as Desperate Romantics on the BBC and by a big exhibition on the artist John William Waterhouse at the Royal Academy of Arts in London.
St Mary's has been the focal point of worship in Rye for over 900 years. During that time it has been raided by the French (who stole the bells); housed the town fire engine and provided a hiding place for smuggled goods! In the 18th century the murder of Alan Grebell in the churchyard scandalised the town. Today St Mary's is a popular destination for tourists, welcoming over 150,000 visitors a year who come to see the oldest church turret clock in the country which is still functioning. It dates from 1561-2 and has an 18ft long pendulum (a much later addition) which can be seen swinging in the body of the church. The present exterior clock face and the original 'Quarter Boys' (so called because they strike the quarters but not the hours) were added in 1760. Those who climb to the top of the tower are rewarded with magnificent views over the rooftops of Rye and the surrounding countryside.
Why not take the opportunity to visit Rye this year to visit St Mary the Virgin and while you’re there enjoy the Rye Christmas Festival which starts on Wednesday 2nd December and runs until December 31st? Events include bell ringing, church and carol services, special farmers markets and a magical Christmas event with the arrival of Father Christmas.Read more

Calling all foodies for some guilt-free gorging before the onset of the Christmas party season. To raise funds for the Rye Christmas Festival 2009, Rye & District Chamber of Commerce has teamed up with The Place at the Beach, Camber Sands, to hold a five course gala dinner on Thursday 29 October - everyone is invited.
N...ew head chef, Austin Gould is passionate about local food and has crafted a mouth-watering menu from some of the best our coast and countryside have to offer. Fillet of black bream in a brown shrimp butter and braised Sussex beef with slow cooked oxtail are guaranteed to tickle your taste buds.
With tables arranged ‘banquet-style’ and a charity raffle to further boost the coffers, the evening promises to be fun and friendly. Nor will you need to toss a coin to decide who’s driving. As Neil Cunliffe, chair of the RDCC explains: ‘We’re delighted that Rye & District Community Transport have joined us to operate a shuttle service for the evening between Rye station and The Place at the Beach. I hope the residents of Rye can join us for a fantastic evening.’
Tudor Hopkins, new co-owner and general manager of The Place at the Beach says:
"We are delighted to be hosting this charitable fundraiser for the Rye Christmas Festival. We look forward to welcoming the local community and show them how the new team at The Place at the Beach has already made some dramatic changes."
So if your mouth is watering at the thought of warm wild mushroom and thyme tart or lavender shortbread, make your booking soon for what promises to be a popular event by calling 01797 225057 or email: enquiries@theplaceatthebeach.co.uk
Dinner begins at 7pm for 7:30pm. Dress code is smart. Tickets cost £25.00.
For full details of the menu and the shuttle service please visit: http://www.theplaceatthebeach.co.uk
