Its
the system not Nike - I would like to see people paid a decent wage too,
but if you pass min wage laws in one country nike and all other simular
firms will just move to another country leaving those you tried to help
in a far worse position of starvation. If you get Nike to raise wages
they will raise prices too and...
l...oose market share and all of us consumeristic americans will buy
subsitutes made by another company who does not pay subsitance wages. I
like the idea of what you are trying to do but getting mad at Nike is
trying to find a quick fix to a problem stemming from capitolism as a
whole.

Colin,

Here are a few quick thoughts on your post. I covered these at my talk in Willamette, that is why I asked if you had attended.

1. I am not asking for minimum wages laws to be passed. A minimum wage law already exists in Indonesia, that is what Nike workers are currently paid and it is a poverty wage. We are asking Nike to pay a living wage (double the current minimum). ... Read more

2. If Nike were to double the current wages to their workers in Indonesia, this would cost them approximately $2.50 more for a pair of sneakers. If Nike ate that added cost, it would be the equivalent of 7% of their advertising budget. If Nike passed that cost on to consumers, it would make a $75 pair of Nike's cost $77.50. That is not a major increase for US consumers and I am confident that they would pay the difference, especially if they were educated about why the increase happened (i.e. so workers could live with dignity).

3. I agree with you that the the broader problem is global capitalism and that we need to foster new ways of structuring the global economic order. One way of creating something new in the shell of the old structure is to create companies where workers have a true democratic voice through effective independent trade unions and/or worker-owned cooperatives. This is what we are fighting for with Nike.

I hope this is helpful.

An EDUCATING FOR JUSTICE LECTURE PROGRAM
featuring JIM KEADY

The debate about sweatshops has been raging for years on U.S. college campuses. But what is it like to live on a sweatshop wage in a developing country?

Jim Keady found out.

Keady spent one month in an Indonesian slum living with Nike factory workers on $1.25 a d...ay, a typical wage paid to the workers.

In BEHIND THE SWOOSH: Sweatshops and Social Justice, Keady shares his stories of living with Nike’s factory workers and his decade long effort to end sweatshop abuses. He also shows audience members what they can do to get involved and join this fight for justice.

Today I will be meeting with Roger Ferguson, the CEO of TIAA-CREF. TIAA-CREF is one of the largest institutional shareholders of Nike stock in the world. They own approximately $244,000,000.00 of Nike Stock. During our meeting, I will be requesting that Mr. Ferguson use TC's stock position to pressure Nike to make a... clear public statement on the issue of worker's wages. To date, with regard to the issue of worker's wages, Nike has been inconsistent at best and has been flat out lying at worst. More information on TC and how to contact them to express your support for my efforts is below.

Peace, Jim Keady
