Can I add that Press for Change have produced an analysis of all the issues in the EB for trans people; however their failure to publish this in a way that people can quote / refer to it really nobbles those of us who would like to draw wider attention to the issues. They seem incapable of simply putting their briefings on a public server so that we can refer to them by URL in media like this.

The Equality Bill The Equality Bill is now done in the commons committee. It will probably move to the Lords later this year - but there are more fights ahead. Watch this space for more.

Can You tell us what Lord Ashleys bill would achieve in equality terms , from what i have read it seems to ask disabled people what they want instead of telling them - how refreshing !

The Equality Bill See our latest article: "Challenging the Conventional Thinking on transgender provision in the Equality Bill". It's possible that the law could be reinterpreted as giving far wider rights to the trans community than was previously thought. Feedback welcome!

There are two main objections from those who believe that the Equality Bill does not do enough to cover transgender rights.

Pre-op trans people are not 'in betweenies' in the same way that a man with gynecomastia is a man, not an 'in betweenie'. Pre-op people are protected by the equality bill anyway, it's people who do not define their gender as strictly male or female who are not protected. I'm also not sure that trans people under 18 are represented in the equality bill either, which is ridiculous.

If you're still puzzled, click the 'Just Fans' link above this post, you'll see a whole other set of comments, which go some way to explain why the bill does nothing for a huge swathe of trans folk.

I didn't realise that the message would show up as a 'status update'. I thought I was responding to Natacha, who wrote about trans rights. See Emma above!

about blinking time - if this had been an obama administation taking over hmg in 1997 this would have been in 100 days- not 12 years of cringing and crawling to business in name of new labour

This is a good piece of legislation and one that will address the inequality caused by greedy employers. There are no reason women should not be paid the same wage for doing the same job as men. I totally reject the notion this is the wrong time to move forward on this issue as there is always another excuse from the CBI and others to say its to ... Read morehard to do. I see the Tories are yet again whinging that this debate is happening while at the same time claiming the legislation does not go far enough. Typical response from them. One thing is guaranteed however if the Tory's where in charge then this legislation would never happen despite what they claim.

when the minimum wage was brought in the CBI was suggesting doom and gloom. It brought some employees out of poverty. Likewise the CBI will no doubt object to the equality bill.
