The Great Boar Hunt has been moved to Rotorua from the Far North to capitalise on the better hunting and central North island location. More than 400 hunters took part in the event, on from October 9-11.
The main day and weigh-in was on Sunday, October 11 on the Village Green in Rotorua when the big boars start coming i...n from all over the North Island. The event also featured one of the country's richest kids' possum hunts, with more than $5000 in prizes up for grabs (free entry just register with a possum).
There was also be a chainsaw carving exhibition, axemen races and events such as the good old gumboot throw mixed in with food and music. There were plenty of television cameras, with popular hunting shows Outdoors With Geoff and Hunting Aotearoa in attendance.
In addition to individual hunter events, there was New Zealand's first club competition with pig hunting clubs getting the opportunity to face off against clubs around New Zealand. Last years' winning boar hit the scales at 218.9 pounds (99.5 kgs).
