Tony Juniper: Our demand for resources now outstrips the natural world's ability to meet it. It's time to foster habits fit for a finite planet

I think the answer is through painting a positive picture of what a ‘post-consumerist... See More’ world could look like – more equal, less stressed and more secure for example. Once we have put over a more compelling view of what the destination could look like we have a range of tools to get us there, not least by changing what we measure. So long as GDP growth remains so central, then we will always have our attention taken there, and away from the more fundamental goals we should be focussed on, and which I think are more about how we achieve long and happy lives, high levels of social cohesion, efficient use of natural resources, low levels of greenhouse gas emissions and low levels of poverty, for example. We can also be looking at how we can create more jobs at the same time as moving to a more sustainable society. Organic farming employs more people than industrial farming, so does recycling compared with incinerators, so does renewable power and energy efficiency compared with nuclear. I fear that we may not be able to persuade many of the politicians we have about this, which is why I have decided to be one myself.
