Banks are back in the news. Just when they hoped quietly to get on with business as usual, we have had sharp reminders of why they can’t.

The Queen’s Speech struck a horribly false note and made us look more than ever like a banana republic rather than the Mother of Parliaments.

There are few Government actions more cynical than waiting for pensioners to die off so they do not receive justice and compensation.

What do MPs, head teachers, judges, Jonathan Ross, the boss of our biggest bank, Service chiefs, GPs and Sir Humphrey all have in common? Not much, except that they are all paid by taxpayers - and all paid very well.

It's all very well to cut the top public sector pensions, but we must not forget that many public sector workers have struggled on low pay and the only benefit will be a pension that precludes them from many other benefits. I'm married to a retired railwayman.

... and how well they pay people who have the enormous talent of being able to read the news from a cue board but litter their speech with 'er-er-er' when the board is not there!

Surely what would make cuts easier to stomach would be if equal numbers were cut from the top as well as bottom of any structure ('consultants' included). That way Councils and other bodies would meet their target for reductions in spending faster and with fewer people out of work (and better able to maintain front-line services). The levels of inequality in our society are not only completely unfair, they make our economy grossly inefficient.
