World Tapir Day

I thoght the second fan video was interesting. I used to spray my tapir, Stanley, with a hose, too. He would always open his mouth like this tapir and angle himself to get the water into his mouth. I saw him do that with rain also. Newquay Zoo (?) in England also reported that their tapirs would open their mouths so th...e running water in an exhibit would go into their mouths. I've never read anything else about this behavior. Have any of you noticed it?Read more

Yes, the Brazilian tapirs at Adelaide Zoo do it as well. I haven't seen the Malaysian tapirs do it, but I think that is more a reflection on the exhibit than the tapirs.

Sheryl Todd We have only 10 of these resin tapirs made by Sergio Sandoval in Colombia, and probably will not be able to get more for reasons described in the blog post. Your purchase helps support tapir conservation. Read about these unique and collectible mountain tapirs!

Rhishja Larson To help raise tapir awareness, I've compiled some cool facts & photos - I hope I have all the species properly identified :) http://ecoworldly.com/2009/09/25/15-cool-facts-about-tapirs-plus-photo-gallery/

Sheryl Todd I want to thank BillyBear4Kids for caring enough to correct the name of the tapir species on their photo page. They added a nice pic of a Baird's tapir. http://www.billybear4kids.com/animal/whose-toes/toes-46a-Tapir.html

Sheryl Todd I would like to ask that tapir fans surfing the web try to contact the webmasters or owners of various sites when you find mis-labelled tapirs. I thought these confusions went out with the 1970s, but they are rampant online. Let's try to educate people. Thanks for your help!

There are only four species of tapir, and they all look different. You would think that Animal Planet, a World Wildlife Fund partner web site, could get it right, but they can't. Two of the 4 top phtos that come up for "Baird's tapir" in a Google web search show the wrong species. These are endangered animals. The cons...ervation orgs can't be bothered to check it out? WWF once put out a stamp series that had it wrong.Read more
