Help CFI stop the spread of misinformation! CFI-affiliated student groups and biology clubs have mobilized at many of the targeted campuses, responding with pro-science and pro-evolution lectures and events, as well as tabling to get educational materials to their peers. CFI is working in coalit...
Barry F Seidman

Barry F Seidman Here's something secular humanists really need to think about as they parade Dawkins and Hitchens around as "humanists." This is a far more humanist view on religion, atheism, and liberalism than either of those two can ever offer our movement. And yes, this guy IS an atheist.. of the most sincere kind... a Marxist a...theist!

Point of Inquiry New Point of Inquiry -- Chris Mooney on scientific illiteracy and the New Atheists: He shares his criticisms of the New Atheists and explains why their attacks against religious moderates work counter to the goal of scientific literacy. He recounts his experiences as an atheist activist while in college, and how his vi...ews have changed about campus freethought activism since that time.

He explores other underlying causes of scientific illiteracy, including our educational system, the media's dysfunctional treatment of science, and growing anti-science movements such as the climate deniers and vaccine skeptics. And he details concrete actions that science advocates can take in order to increase scientific literacy.

I think that Mooney has sold his soul for the sake of good PR. After listening to this interview I am not even remotely interested in reading his book, which sounds more like a book about his politics, than about science. I also think he is missing the point, you don't need to agree with everyone for them to respect your opinion. There is a ... See Moredefinite difference between disrespectful, respectful differences of opinion. Getting into bed with religious moderates is a political alliance and science isn't supposed to be about political correctness it is supposed to be about empiricism, even when you are communicating with the public. In fact probably even more so when you are communicating and educating, otherwise you come across as just a wishy washy post modernist in a white lab coat. What is he proposing we do create an alliance with the moderates to overthrow the zealots and then turn on them later when the major enemy has been defeated?

Thanks for putting up the like to the Myers blog post. I just read it and as always he makes me laugh not just at his prose but at his opponents because of it. His argument is far more compelling than the one put forward by Mooney in this interview.

Maughn Rollins Gregory

Maughn Rollins Gregory Happy paraskevidekatriaphobia (fear of Friday the 13th) day! Why don’t we, the skeptical community, make every Friday the 13th a holiday for skepticism? We could stage some public anti-superstition demonstrations like walking under ladders, breaking mirrors, inviting the evil eye, and othewise making fun of ghosts, ang...els, devils, crystals, UFOs, divining rods, amulets, crop circles, Big Foot, etc. - whatever is locally relevant for us. Is anyone already doing this?

Yes, and late in the interview, when challenged on this point, he says it is up to the people with the best arguments to win the fight. But I liked their discussion.
