Gosh - does Hitchens really say that if you are against the hereditary principle for the monarchy you must be against all property (which can be inherited)? This is nonsense! Power, or a political position is not a personal possession in the same way a sideboard or a painting is. Ironically the Levellers faced similar criticisms 350 years ago; if one opposes an aspect civil authority one must oppose property. It is simply a rhetoric of reaction and was wrong then as it is now

Or, as I think the philosopher Baldrick had it, "because someone's grandad was a bigger bastard than someone else's grandad."

Either way, not a valid way to become a head of state...

Republic Campaign Very interesting report from the Daily Politics on the Queen's role in a Hung Parliament. (thanks to Eddie Bernard for pointing this out)

Source: news.bbc.co.uk
If the polls are to be believed, we could be looking at a Hung Parliament after the 2010 general election, but what would actually happen and who would be in charge, and for how long? Giles Dilnot explains.

Parliament hung in February 1974. Tories under Heath won more votes, but Labour under Wilson won more seats. Queenie asked Heath to form a coalition with the Liberals, but talks failed, so Heath resigned and Wilson took number 10. Wilson then called an election in October and won with a slim majority.

Surely it would be better to transfer this ... Read morepower of the Monarch over to the Speaker of The House? Get rid of all her other hidden "residual powers" as well, or the "Royal Perogative" as the posh folk call it.

@John Bryant: clarify it with Clegg, I think. Clegg should re-think his position. Whichever party has 'won' the popular vote is still likely to have only a minor proportion of the popular vote (say 40% or so, if that be the case). In this case, Clegg has principle on his side to declare now that he would not get into bed with the Tories. His case is flawed.

Eddie Q. Bernard

Eddie Q. Bernard There was a fascinating segment on The Daily Politics today about what might happen in the eventuality of a hung parliament and how big the Queen's role could potentially be.

Sadly, it didn't follow its argument to the logical conclusion, i.e. the person in control of such a process really ought to be fully legitimised by democracy.

Jack has sent us this list of bullet points on the virtues of the monarchical system, as he sees them. Here they are, with our thoughts on each: Monarchs are an enduring symbol of continuity and statehood. Thus, they provide a sense of unity and while crystallizing a national identity...

A new opinion poll over the weekend shows Labour closing the Tory lead down to 6%, a figure that could rob Cameron of an outright majority or even place Labour as the single largest party after the next election, leaving us with a hung parliament...

'Dave' Cameron is 'Thatcher with better teeth'. Spot on. Even if he's more 'bourgeois triumphalist' than die-hard old regime he's no republican. A Tory majority government is not going to move forward the public debate on our farcical 'kingdom'.

Republic Campaign Please get your MP to sign this Early Day Motion. It urges the government not to go through with its proposal to exempt the monarchy completely from Freedom of Information. This is something that all MPs - republican and monarchist alike - should be able to support. For background info see http://www.republic.org.uk/foi.
