SAVE VCA

SAVE VCA With so many VCA staff leaving, Dean Sharman wants to throw a party! Instead of a party, perhaps the Dean should be holding a crisis meeting as to why so many talented and wonderful staff are leaving VCA!

If we could just convince the Dean to leave, then we really could have a party!

This was what was reproduced in Crikey's Mail:

Christina Buckridge, Corporate Affairs Manager, University of Melbourne writes: Re. "VCA accidentally leaks its own website attacking critics" (yesterday). Crikey readers may be re-assured that the extensive consultative process on the key challenges and opportunities facing the Faculty of the VCA and Music and the University in higher arts education is not in "chaos".

On the contrary, it's just getting underway with the release of a discussion paper -- Defining the Future for the Faculty of the VCA and Music at the University of Melbourne -- two weeks ago. This week the independent chair of the Review Committee, Dr Ziggy Switkowski, was announced. The Hon Mary Delahunty has agreed to join the Committee as the community representative. Other members of the committee will be announced shortly.... See More

The discussion paper canvasses input on a range of options for the Faculty of the VCA and Music, around the three critical areas of structure, curriculum and finance.

Questions posed throughout the discussion paper encourage engagement in the consultation process. The consultation is not limited to these questions but invites new questions as well as ideas, comments and proposals from staff, students, alumni, employers, the arts community and the wider community.

The consultative process provides a critical opportunity to contribute to the future direction of this Faculty and I would urge various interested parties to make submissions to vcam-feedback@unimelb.edu.au by 12 February 2010.

This looks to me appallingly bungled, arrogant and self-righteous. Poor old Sharman. Those staff in NZ never put up such a fight when she 'restructured' them, and as a consequence she clearly never thought this lot would be any tougher.

VCA students have already been disadvantaged by the disruptions to their studies by thier courageous support and commitment to saving the VCA, which included the support for the staff and NTEU stance over the past year. The NTEU could find other ways to compromise UoM amd RMIT rather than putting the students at disadvantage. I would have thought ... See Morethat the NETU's support for its members could have been extended to supporting students who need their results. Why should students have to request a special exemption form to receive what is rightfully theirs from an organisation which claims to support them and their concerns. Not fair and not to be trusted.

Yes people from the arts are smart enough to apply and move sideways into other professions and be on the boards of major companies in other industries. However people from other professions generally are ignorant and think that a sideways shift into the arts is easy, the arts being simplistic and any additional application on their part un-... See Morenecessary. NET result: the arts are managed by people with no idea, no application and further economic rationalism which can not quantify the cost/benefits the arts deliver to the community.

Apart from anything else Telstra was run into the ground and never realised its promised results and the further support of these board members and ceo's etc is a blatant furthering of 'jobs for the boys' They stuffed up their own industry who in their right mind would want them to engage in another.
