Spillers Records For our 2010 Spillers Records Calender we are organising a group photo of people in Spillers T shirts again. You need to meet us on Sunday 6th September from 4:45pm on the grass in front of the museum, with the picture being taken at 5: 30 on the museum steps. Rain or shine, it will go ahead so bring an umbrella just i...n case...

Many of you will have done this last year so please come again and bring friends, and we'll try to get even more people this time.

We are also requesting people to send us any Spillers related pictures to us at info@spillersrecords.com for use in the calendar.

-----------------

AFTER THE PHOTOSHOOT:

Come along to the Pen & Wig pub after we've finished taking the photo - we've sorted some special drinks offers if you're still wearing your Spillers T-Shirt.

The Pen and Wig is here: http://www.cardiffpubs.co.uk/Pub.php?Pub=PenAndWig
and also serves food.

If you have a Spillers T, we need you!

Spillers Records After a fantastic full band set at his album launch in the Globe, Chris drops in to play tracks from his new album in a more stripped down way.

----------------

Fourth Album spins tales of Murder! Heartbreak! Salvation!

Following his critically acclaimed 2007 album Cautionary Tales, “A genuinely roots affair…that deserve...s to be admired”, (Fred Dellar – MOJO) Welsh singer, song writer, multi instrumentalist and producer Christopher Rees has developed his narrative storytelling even further with his fourth album Devil’s Bridge.

Largely revolving around compelling tales of murder and misconduct, he has also incorporated themes like curiosity, karma, confessions, mortality, sacrifice, shadows, heaven, hell, desolation,
imprisonment, conviction and awakening to create his most disarmingly upbeat and immediate record yet.

With ‘Prescott’s Confession’ he uses traditional lyrics from 1833 and places them over a new banjo stomp, while self-penned originals like ‘What Walks Outside My Window?’ and ‘Shadows In The Night’ sound
as if they could’ve come from a 50’s Rockabilly session at Sun Studio in Memphis (a place Rees visited as part of his musical pilgrimage through Tennessee last year). The presence of veteran rockabilly guitarists Pete Mathison (Ray Davies) and John Lewis (The Rimshots) also help inject a certain vintage authenticity. Katy Rowe adds her irresistible violin to the frenzied bluegrass of ‘Kicked Out By Love’ and drummer Dan Tilbury (The Snakes, ....Redlands.... Palomino Company) provides inspired drumming throughout. Rees stretches himself to take care of all other instrumentation including guitars, banjo, mandolin, lap steel, church organ, piano, bass, choral backing voices and chapel shaking, foot stamping, hand clapping percussion!

Devil’s Bridge is clearly informed by Rees’ love of Americana, in all its diverse and dynamic glory. From Rock'n'Roll to Bluegrass, Gospel, Blues, Country, Spaghetti Western, Rockabilly and Appalachian Folk it’s all there. The cinematic tremolo guitars so favoured by Quentin Tarantino and David Lynch also provide some enticing atmosphere but as the 12 piece choral sections to songs like ‘All Our Beds Are Made’ and ‘World’s Fall Apart Everyday’ show, there remains something quintessentially Welsh about it.

Titled Devil’s Bridge because the album was predominantly recorded in a mountain retreat near the village of the same name in Ceredigion, Mid Wales and because of its connotations to the subject matter, it sees Rees take another giant step forward on a journey that becomes ever more fascinating and rewarding with each new album.

Spillers Records 3 great acts who we love and know how they sell here in the shop - we know you love them too!

Cate Le Bon

Flipping brilliant songstress with all star backing band. Here beautifully packaged vinyl release sell like hot cakes.
When sahe's not playing key-tar in Neon Neon, she's playing beguiling and haunting tunes.

Alex Di...ngley

He made one of the best albums of 2007. His tunes are catchy (but not throw away!) and will stick in your head for weeks!

Zonderhoof

Bringing a dose of doom, the 'hoof make stoner-math-sludge with enough noodle to make Zappa weep!

=====================================================

Frederick Stanley Star are based in Cardiff and just released their debut LP on Shape records. (They also play SWN on Saturday in Buffalo)

Cate Le Bon plays a mean keytar in Neon Neon but also makes her own folk music which has been known to move grown men (and ladies) to tears. Her records have sold like hot cakes so it’s about time she graced our in-store ‘stage’!
(Cate plays a set at Swn on Saturday in The Gate)

SJ Esau is a Bristolian whose records are released by the ever so cutting edge ‘Anticon’ label.Expect lo-fi electronic ditties with a sense of melancholy!
(He plays The Reardon Smith (Museum) on Saturday evening)

Gindrinker – Ah, our old favourites return! They’re not playing Swn this year, so this is super exclusive! There’s a picture of this duo up in the shop as part of the Clwb exhibition, so it made sense to invite them to the party!

Come along and hang out while you build up the stamina for more Swn time fun
